Officials Charged Up Over New Battery Plant In East Greensboro

There was some good news for the local economy on Thursday, Dec. 5, just in time for Christmas: NC Secretary of Commerce Tony Copeland, speaking at the O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro on behalf of NC Gov. Roy Cooper, announced that Sunlight Batteries – a Greek battery maker – will open a manufacturing plant in east Greensboro, an area of the city where people have been asking for new jobs and more economic development for a long time.

Phillips And Perdue County’s New Chair And Vice Chair

It’s official. Guilford County Commissioner Jeff Phillips once again has “Chairman” in front of his name. The Board of Commissioners gave Phillips that honor on a unanimous vote of 8-to-0 at the board’s Thursday, Dec. 5 meeting. The board also made Commissioner Alan Perdue vice chairman on a 7-to-1 vote.

The board has released its meeting calendar for 2020 – a calendar that includes a two-day retreat on Monday, Feb. 24 and Tuesday, Feb. 25, only one meeting in January and one in July, and a special meeting on Monday morning, Dec. 7 to swear in local elected officials who win in the November 2020 election.

Civil Rights Museum Gives Thanks For Community Support

The Civil Rights Museum is holding a special Thanksgiving program on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. called “A Civil-Rights Thanksgiving— American Constitutional Resurrection (and the Unrepentant Redeemed).” According to promotional literature for the event, it will help people “more fully understand who we are and why we might be able to enjoy a grateful day of reflections.”

County Asks State To Pay $2 Million For Voting Machines

There’s a saying, “There’s no harm in asking,” and the Guilford County Board of Commissioners seems to adhere to that belief because the commissioners have collectively decided to ask the State of North Carolina to give Guilford County $2 million since the state forced the county to spend that amount on new voting machines.

Jeff Phillips To Lead Board Of Commissioners In 2020

Guilford County Commissioner Jeff Phillips will serve as the chairman of the Board of Commissioners for 2020 according to several sources on that board. The board will elect its next chairman at the first meeting in December and Phillips will serve for the following 12 months in that role – during what, by all accounts, will be a critical year for Guilford County government and one in which the county will face a great many of challenges.

“It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane – No, It’s The New CRJ-550!”

Normally, if an airline makes a splash with an aircraft, that’s a very bad thing.However, on Friday, Nov. 22, United Airlines did its best to make a big, positive public relations splash at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA). At the event, the airline debuted the “first-of-its-kind” CRJ-550 Aircraft and conducted tours of the plane that will now serve the PTIA/Chicago route.

County Buys New Paper-Based Voting Machines For 2020

At a Thursday, Nov. 21 work session, Guilford County Board of Elections Director Charlie Collicutt put on a demonstration of new voting machines that county voters will be using in 2020. At a second meeting, held right after the demonstration, the Board of Commissioners voted to purchase the new machines for roughly $2.2 million.

Elections Board Double-Checking High Point Ward 6 Race

The Guilford County Board of Elections has called an “emergency meeting” for Wednesday, Nov. 20, to conduct a second recount for the High Point City Council Ward 6 race. The current results stand at a six-vote difference – 838 to 832 – with candidate Michael Holmes in the lead over current Ward 6 Councilmember Jason Ewing.
