An Encounter With Mean People

I was faffing about today, examining the shoe selection at Reidsville’s Wal-Mart, wondering if I should eschew my usual $120 boots for a more affordable option, when around the corner suddenly came a waist height object that drew my eyes. A young boy in a child’s wheelchair, staring up at me with a beautiful blue-eyed smile. “Hello!” I said. “Hi” came the cheerful response. Fair haired and freckled, an open and innocent face, around nine or ten years old, greeting a complete stranger with a ray of sunlight. His skinny little legs seemed bound together somehow, but he disappeared as quickly as he had appeared. What a wonderful attitude for a boy with such a crippling disability, I thought…

Loose Lips Part 2

A letter to the editor by Rhino Times Alan Burke.
(This is a continuation of Burke’s comments from a previous letter.)
As “Signal Gate” balloons, biased critics look more hostile, irrational, and sheltered than ever.  Cell phones and text messaging are already an unstoppable reality.

There are countless historical examples of failures when traditionalists resist technology.  Initially, military traditionalists feared the security risks of two-way radios.  So, many continued to use pen and paper exclusively.  Radio signals transmit everywhere within a radius.  The entertainment radios of the time could accidentally pick up transmissions.  However, pen and paper also had risks.  Slow couriers could be delayed, intercepted, or killed by the enemy.  The courier could be a spy or otherwise sympathetic to the enemy’s cause…

Decorum…Look It Up Democrats

A letter to the editor from Rhino Times reader Alan Marshall

There was what I would consider a major screw up, committed by a high ranking member of the Intelligence/LEO community, with the unintentional addition of an unauthorized member of the 4th Estate in a Signal based app conference concerning a military strike against the Houthis. The Democrats were quick to start calling for the resignation of everybody from the person responsible up to every level official short of the President.

Info In Signal Leak Was Not Classified

A letter to the editor by Rhino Times reader Alan Burke

Loose lips may sink ships, but that doesn’t mean it’s classified…or a military plan

The controversy surrounding Mike Waltz’s use of “Signal” highlights confusion between two similar yet distinct concepts: Operational Security (OPSEC) and Classified Information.

Operational Security is a piece of information that, by itself, is not classified.  However, if compiled with other separate information from other sources, it may total into classified information.  Even if it doesn’t sum into sensitive, secret, or top secret information, it could still benefit a persistent enemy…

Showing Their True Colors

While I’m sure there have been incidents’ involving Republicans/Conservatives, I cannot remember a more sorry reaction or worse, a lack of a reaction, from the “leadership” of the Democrat Party for what is happening now. And I am calling out the Democrat Party, more specifically the (National Socialist) Democrat Party for NOT standing up and calling out these childish animals. In fact, their silence is what, IMO, is encouraging these actions. And when they do deem us worthy of hearing from them from on high, they believe they have to use their entire encyclopedia of 4 letter words in what they believe is a tip of the hat to their followers…

Scouting Is A Positive In A World Of Negativity

I am writing to you to express the positive impact that scouting has had on my life in a world of negativity.  Scouting has helped me to get outside of my comfort zone and try new things.  One of those new things is to write an editorial, hence the reason I’m sending this to you. Some of the things that scouting has taught me are how to be more responsible and how to be prepared for something when things do not go according to plan.  When I was completing my Eagle Scout project recently…

OUR money, OUR ‘Representatives,’ OUR Voices

From an article on the proposed County school budget of $947 million dollars ($947,000,000.00)…

“…$3 million for enhanced safety measures, and $11 million for facility improvements.”

They are sitting on $2 billion dollars ($2,000,000,000.00) and yet demand (and make no mistake they will eventually frame it as a demand) another $1 billion dollars ($1,000,000,000.00 rounded up) to continue to ‘operate for the children’. This is one of the major reasons Board of Commissioners are DEMANDING, not requesting, a huge tax increase on property owners…

Is It Time for Greensboro to Rethink DEI?

The following is a letter to the editor from Rhino Times reader Nicky Smith, a candidate for Greensboro City Council District 4

Is It Time for Greensboro to Rethink DEI? Balancing Equity, Merit, and Federal Compliance

The recent actions taken by High Point University (HPU) to ban, then reverse course on, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) language in response to federal funding threats have reignited a critical discussion: Is DEI achieving its intended goals, or has it become a barrier to hiring the most qualified individuals? Greensboro should take note of this debate and consider reassessing its own DEI initiatives.

HPU swiftly removed nearly 50 DEI-related terms, fearing that failure to comply with federal directives could jeopardize millions in funding. The university’s decision, though later softened, underscores a broader issue—many institutions and organizations nationwide are beginning to reconsider whether DEI policies are truly fostering fairness or inadvertently creating new disparities….

It Should Take More Than A Simple Majority To Raise Property Taxes

The property tax increase proposed by Comrade Skip Alston and most likely backed by his ‘yes sir’ cronies on the Board pushes the limits of County residents to have even a chance of having their heads above water. Given the makeup of the Board it will pass and there is nothing we can do about it.

One idea I’ve thought of was legislation requiring a ¾ majority vote on tax issues to pass because a simple majority is too slanted to the side of those Board members voted in by City residents. I already hear the screams about how that’s not fair. So it’s not fair that city critters outnumber county critters so when Greensboro and High Point want something…

Essential Department of Education Services Could Be Preserved

The following is a letter to the editor from Rhino Times Reader Maria Adams

There have been some concerns about the possible dismantling of the Department of Education. Many are worried about losing vital federal funding for crucial programs. However, there is a way to preserve these essential services moving forward.

According to a proposed legislation, federal funds for essential programs will continue to be available, but they will be reallocated to different state departments, including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of…

There’s No Reason To Protest DOGE

The following is a letter to the editor by Rhino Times reader Patrick Henry.

I have to wonder why they are trying to make it look like large numbers of people are protesting the actions of DOGE. I also have to wonder how many of those people are government employees whose jobs are on the chopping block because they are not a necessity to efficient (emphasis on ‘efficient’) operation of the federal government.

From working(?) from home (and compound that with the cost of maintaining empty or near empty buildings at DC rates) to the salaries and benefit packages they get, it’s little wonder these people are not excited about the gravy train finally pulling into the station. They are going to have to get REAL jobs and join the rest of us working stiffs. How many people ever heard of “franking” and know how our elected representatives abuse it for personal gain? …

America Is Very Lucky To Have Trump

“ Trump won 77,284,118 votes, or 49.8 percent of the votes cast for president. That is the second highest vote total in U.S. history, trailing only the 81,284,666 votes ( seems impossible doesn’t it) that Joe Biden won in 2020. Trump won 3,059,799 more popular votes in 2024 than he won in 2020 and 14,299,293 more than he won in 2016. He now holds the record for the most cumulative popular votes won by any presidential candidate in U.S. history, surpassing Barack Obama. Running three times for the White House obviously helps. His count in 2025 was TOO BIG TO FAIL.
Kamala Harris won 74,999,166 votes or 48.3 percent of the votes cast. That was 6,285,500 fewer popular votes than Biden won in 2020, but 774,847 more than Trump won in 2020…

Don’t Be Afraid Of The ‘Starving Children’ Accusation

The following is a letter to the editor from Rhino Times reader Alan Burke.

True defense of the world’s “starving children”

The majority of Americans support USAID under two conditions:

It sticks to funding basic food/water, infrastructure, health (immunizations, antibiotics, antiretrovirals, and maternal health), and education (math, science, and reading) during international humanitarian assistance,
Domestic spending on social security, Medicare/Medicaid, VA health, and FEMA isn’t risked.

In Defense Of The Lowly Penny

Abolishing the Penny seems like a good idea at first blush, but there would be two negative consequences.

Without the ability to make exact change in cash, merchants will inevitably start folding sales tax into the listed price, rather than adding it to the price. So a $10.00 item will come to be priced at $10.70 (incl. tax) on shelves.

I’ve seen this before. When VAT (Value Added Tax, a variant of sales tax) was introduced in the UK, many stores initially quoted their prices as “plus VAT”, so the VAT was added to the transaction at the end, as we do here. But ultimately they all folded the tax into the price, for the sake of clarity and simplicity….

Nancy Hoffmann Says Facts Matter – And She Offers Some

The following is a letter to the editor from Greensboro City Councilmember Nancy Hoffmann

Truth and Facts Matter

Contrary to what has been reported, I moved to Greensboro in January, 1998 and voted in every election from 1998 to the present.

My Greensboro residency and voting record have been questioned and misrepresented, so here are the facts which can be verified at the Guilford County Board of Elections.

I joined a home furnishings company in High Point in January, 1998 as Director of Marketing and Sales. I rented an apartment in Greensboro and registered to vote in Greensboro February 18, 1998. I voted in the May 5, 1998 County Primary & Baseball Referendum at this address…

Setting the Record Straight: My Commitment to Greensboro

The following is a letter to the editor by Rhino Times Reader Nicky Smith.

At the recent Greensboro City Council meeting, Councilmembers Nancy Hoffmann and Nancy Vaughan unjustly attacked me. They misrepresented my leadership and policies to discredit me. This was an orchestrated and planned attack on me and my conservative views and values. Interestingly, they did not spend time questioning other candidates—what are they afraid of?

I never claimed sole credit for the Preserve Friendly Avenue initiative; over 1,500 homeowners worked together to secure the Neighborhood Conservation Overlay (NCO). If you ask any of the Preserve Friendly initiative committee members, they will tell you that I was the driving force behind all the activities to achieve the NCO. Authentic leadership is about mobilizing communities, not self-promotion….

Where Do You Stand, Nancy Hoffmann?

You may have seen Greensboro City Councilwoman Nancy Hoffmann’s harsh
statements aimed towards local resident and businessman, Nicky Smith, during the city council
meeting on Tuesday, January 27th. If you didn’t, I suggest you search the internet to find a clip
of it. Nicky Smith spoke about his vision for Greensboro and shared his thoughts about filling the
at-large seat formerly held by the late Yvonne Johnson. After speaking, Nancy Hoffmann
responded to Smith with a 10-minute tirade against him and his background. This seemingly
came out of nowhere, as no other speaker attempting to fill Johnson’s seat was treated in this
manner. On the surface, Hoffmann’s attack was grueling to say the least; but therein lies the
problem, “on the surface.”…

Media Biased On Hostage Releases

I’m watching the news, jumping back and forth between FOX and MSNBC on coverage of the release of the three Israeli hostages.

What amazes me is the level of somewhat sympathetic coverage of the Palestinian prisoners being released versus that of the Israelis. They were going on and on about women and children being exchanged, talking about the supposed conditions while there was NO talk about how the Israelis were kept and treated. It will be interesting to hear their story and how they were treated. They talked about the children but I have yet to hear one word about children and infants that were taken by the terrorists have been treated. They talk about the civilians, women and children, killed during the war. What about the Israeli CIVILIANS that have been killed by spineless wonders. ANY civilian casualties in combat should be avoided as much as is physically possible but when your targets are in schools, hospitals, private homes with civilians being used, in some cases involuntarily, as shields by an organization of uncaring animals who hide behind a religion to justify their actions it is literally impossible to avoid those casualties….

Phil Byrd Wants To See A New Sheriff In Town In 2026

Low morale, severe officer shortages, rampant employee turnover, wasteful spending, lack of transparency, failed hiring practices, and the list goes on.

Is Greensboro not better than this?  Is this the best we can do. Roger’s lack of leadership ability and resource management skill have cost the taxpayers dearly.

I haven’t even scratched the surface on his failures to help reduce violent crime in Greensboro.
Having NO plan is a plan to fail. Rogers has done well in the category of failures….

Being Homeless Is Not A Walk In The Park

So I am currently homeless and have been for two and a half years.

I have a few points from what people have mentioned here:

– GSO is an easy place to be homeless, apparently?

I would like to point out that being homeless ANYWHERE, even in a shelter, is not easy in any shape, form or fashion under any circumstances. You don’t even understand or comprehend the mental determination, acumen and strength it takes to walk around this city, and especially within the homeless community, to merely collect things you need to barely survive. Need fresh water? Often that’s a mile walk from where many homeless reside. Food? Once again, miles a day walked. A shower? If you mean the 4 hours a day the IRC offers them 5 days a week max, then a basic count of approximately 300 homeless using these “Amenities” get to have 4 minutes of showering a week – each. Less on the weeks when the IRC is closed on a Friday for “Staff training”…

A Seven Point Plan To Save Greensboro

The following is a letter to the editor from Rhino Times reader Jim Donaldson
This is my road map to make Greensboro Great again!

The first thing that needs to be done with the Greensboro Mayor, City Council, and Department Heads of the City of Greensboro is to establish accountability.
1) No one should serve as our Mayor on our City Council if they or their entity is funded by the City of Greensboro and its taxpayers.
2) Our Chief of Police must immediately fall under a new incentive plan which will be based on his or her performance. The bar will be set by the rate of crime in Greensboro. Other incentives will be based on the number of illegal guns and habitual offenders that are taken off our streets. This compensation plan will penalize the compensation of our Police Chief based on homicides, aggravated assaults, auto crash injuries, and property damages from auto crashes in our city….

Thoughts On Officer Horan’s Death

The following is a letter to the editor from an unnamed Rhino Times reader.

With the murder of Officer Mike Horan, the ranks of GPD got thinner. Anyone who watched either in person or on TV the event of Thursday saw the pomp and circumstance that is an officers funeral (flashing lights, a riderless horse, a caisson, honors, taps, bagpipes and a 21 gun salute). It was miserable and magnificent. Miserable in watching tough, strong men and women in uniform trying not to shed tears or sniffle; another family grieving their lost loved one. Magnificent in the nationwide attendance, the precision of the event and the sense of family shared with all of the departments there…

Taking a Stand for Accountability and Safer Streets in Greensboro

In January 2024, John Hammer reported in the Rhino Times that the City Council approved over $1 million in funding for nonprofits through the Community Violence Intervention and Interruption Project. According to a report in the Rhino Times, these funds were allocated to nonprofits linked to Council members, yet this approach has shown no measurable impact on reducing crime in Greensboro. In fact, crime has increased over the past year. I firmly believe that public safety cannot be improved through misdirected or ineffective spending. The City Council must ensure that taxpayer dollars are used responsibly, prioritizing initiatives with proven results, rather than supporting pet projects that may benefit Council members but fail to address our community’s challenges….

We’ve Had Enough Professional Politicians

Firebaugh and others stood with Bill and myself to declare their support for Bill.
