Commissioners Ask: Where’s Our Sales Tax Hike Support?

One item that will be on the ballot for Guilford County voters to decide in November is a quarter-cent increase in the sales tax. At the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, Thursday, Aug. 27 work session, many commissioners openly expressed their aggravation over the fact that a group of prominent business leaders in the community didn’t sound like they were going to get behind the move and push for the sales tax increase.

NC’s COVID-19 Weekend Numbers Skewed By Massive Late Reporting

Anyone who looked at the state’s COVID-19 numbers on Saturday, Aug. 29 was likely shocked to see a dramatic spike in the number of positive cases reported that day. County Jails Get Some Good News On COVID-19

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began earlier this year, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department has been taking precautions to prevent an outbreak in the county’s two jails. On Thursday, Aug. 27, the department reported some good news in that regard. Though the Sheriff’s Department had found a half-dozen jail-related cases among staff earlier this summer, a new round of testing didn’t find any additional cases.

GSO Economic Development Leader Makes Landmark Decision

Greensboro’s economic development community lost a key player in the city’s efforts to bring new business to the area, David Ramsey – who for years has been putting in a lot of effort in Greensboro’s efforts to attract new industry as the executive vice president of economic development for the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce – has taking a job with general contractor Landmark Builders. COVID-19 Restrictions Create Voting Problems In Nursing Homes

No one needs any more potential problems with people voting in the upcoming election. However, Cathy Bencini and her husband, former High Point Mayor Bill Bencini, came across one when trying to help Cathy’s 96-year-old mother vote from a nursing home.   Her mother is a resident of Pennybryn at Maryfield in High Point and the problem came when the two were attempting to help the mother vote in the upcoming election.

County Jails Implement Extensive New Virus Testing Initiative

In response to the fact that a half dozen Guilford County detention officers recently tested positive for coronavirus, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department is implementing a new program that will provide COVID-19 testing for all detention officers, all members of the jail medical staff, as well as every inmate – in both the county jail in Greensboro and the one in High Point.

State Offers Fast Funds To Place Homeless In Motels For Pandemic

The NC Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Management (NCEM) and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) announced on Tuesday, Aug. 11 that the state is offering a new, expedited reimbursement program meant to expand sheltering options with proper social distancing in communities across the state.
