The $23.9 million project to demolish the old Guilford County jail and build a new Sheriff’s Department administrative complex in downtown Greensboro has come to a screeching halt.

The Town of Jamestown just got a nice half-million-dollar grant to add a special section to an existing town attraction – an all-inclusive/accessible playground at Jamestown Park. 

For weeks, Guilford County and Samet Corp. have been fighting a behind the scenes war over the project in downtown Greensboro that includes the demolition of the old Guilford County jail and the construction of a new Sheriff’s Department’s headquarters. 

On Monday, March 2, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to end a contract with Samet on a $23.9 million project that included demolishing the old Guilford County jail in downtown Greensboro and building a new Sheriff’s Department headquarters and parking lot.

It may be hard to believe that a lot of people don’t want to take a job where the employee works in a tightly enclosed, locked down, virtually sunless environment with accused and convicted criminals, but still, in 2023, that continues to be the case.

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners took a stunning and unprecedented step after a two-hour closed session at the end of the board’s Thursday, March 2 meeting. 

On Thursday, March 2, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) released a statement on Medicaid expansion in the state, which it called “a momentous agreement that will directly improve the health and well-being of 600,000 North Carolinians.”
