Jobs can be a hard thing to come by during a pandemic, but some companies, like package delivery services, do quite well under those circumstances.

So, it may come as no surprise that United Parcel Service, much better known as UPS, is holding a one-day hiring event in Greensboro – or, at least, an online event for Greensboro. That will happen on Friday, Oct. 30, the day when the company will hold roughly 250 similar hiring fairs – some virtual some not – in other parts of the country.

UPS holds these hiring fairs, known as “Brown Fridays,” once a year to get some extra help for its holiday season business, but this year there’s more of a need for workers since, due to the pandemic, much more of the holiday gift buying and gift giving will be done online.

The Greensboro event will be held virtually, with applicants checking into a virtual lobby and then taking part in online interviews with UPS Human Resources representatives.

The company plans to hire at least 50,000 new employees nationwide through the events – and UPS representatives will be making job offers on the spot.

In the Greensboro area, UPS plans to hire for about 1,100 positions – including driver helpers, package handlers and seasonal drivers.

A lot of people who work for the UPS say it works its employees hard but add that the jobs provide very good benefits.

According to promotional material for the hiring event, “Seasonal positions at UPS are frequently a foot in the door to a full-time position – and for many, to a great career. 37 percent of UPS seasonal workers last year came back to a permanent job after the holidays. About 123,000 UPS employees – nearly a third of the company’s US workforce – started in seasonal positions.”
