The 2022 Wyndham Championship is one for the record books.

Joohyung “Tom” Kim shot a 61 in the final round on Sunday, August 7, to win by five strokes over Sungjae Im and John Huh, who finished tied for second.

Kim is the first player born in the 21st century to win on the PGA tour, and at 20 he is the second youngest player since World War II to win a PGA Tour victory behind Jordan Spieth who won his first victory at 19.

It was a remarkable comeback for Kim, who had a quadruple bogey 8 on the very first hole of the Wyndham and then played the following 71 holes in 24-under. On Sunday, Kim started the final round two shots behind the leader.  He parred the first hole and then played the next eight holes in in 8-under.

Kim said that securing his PGA Tour card last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit took a lot of pressure off.  He said, “I told myself from the start of the week, ‘Just have fun, enjoy it, you’ve got your card already.  Enjoy every single moment of it, have fun and just don’t get too intense.’  But this back nine was crazy.  It was probably the most intense round I’ve played.  My putter felt like it weighed 200 pounds today.”

The Wyndham Championship was just Kim’s 15th start on the PGA Tour and his ninth this season.  The win qualifies him for the FedEx Cup playoffs, which means Kim won’t be taking a couple of weeks off as he had planned.

Greensboro has a long history of first-time winners with a total of 20 players scoring their first PGA Tour victory in the tournament in Greensboro which some old timers insist on still calling the GGO.
