The Fun Fourth Freedom Fest will be held in downtown Greensboro from noon to 6 p.m. on Monday, July 4 along South Elm Street between Market Street and Lewis Street sponsored by Downtown Greensboro Inc. (DGI).
One of the new features this year is the “Red, White and Roll” roller-skating rink, which will be in Zone 3 between Washington Street and McGee Street. Another is a balloon maze, which of course will be made with patriotic-colored balloons in Zone 2 near February 1 Place.
But perhaps the most unexpected new feature this year will be weddings. Four couples have been awarded a free wedding as part of the “Red, White and Say ‘I Do’” feature that will take place during the festival on the stage in Zone 4 near Lewis Street. The weddings are scheduled to take place between 3 and 5:30 p.m. unless one or more of the chosen participants gets cold feet.
Each of the four zones has a stage with live entertainment from noon to 6 p.m. The Zone 4 stage along with the weddings will feature “Oh Say Can You Sing” karaoke.
There will also be competitive games for teams of five where each member will compete in a different event including cup stacking, trivia, charades and a balloon head bounce. The team that racks up the most points will win prizes.
DGI President Zack Matheny said in a press release, “These new contests will bring even more Americana celebration to our Freedom Fest. Folks will find something for every age interest to truly make this a festival for the entire community.”
There is a wagon decorating contest as well as patriotic dress contest.
The annual Fun Fourth Freedom Run featuring a 10K, 5K and Fun Run begins at 7:30 a.m. at Center City Park.
Along with the multitude of eating and drinking establishments in downtown Greensboro for Fun Fourth there will be a host of food trucks offering a great variety of food and drink options.
Fun downtown in an oxymoron.
