Fun Fourth in Downtown Greensboro will be back in 2021 – a day early, on Saturday, July 3.
The one-day celebration in downtown Greensboro is scaled back from pre-COVID-19 Fun Fourth celebrations, but will be huge compared to the 2020 Fun Fourth, which along with every other event where more than two people might gather in the same place at the same time in 2020, was canceled.
The 2021 version of Fun Fourth will include the Freedom Run, live music, strolling performers and more.
Downtown Greensboro Inc. (DGI) President Zack Matheny said, “It takes us over six months to plan our traditional two-day Fun Fourth events in the center city. Six months ago we were still in the middle of a pandemic with no end in sight. Today, I’m proud of my team for pulling together an exciting one-day event that will welcome us out of our houses and back into the community.”
The Fun Fourth Freedom Fest in Downtown Greensboro sponsored by Allegacy will be held on South Elm Street from February One Place to Lewis Street beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 3.
The area will host three live music stages sponsored by HAECO Americas, the Greensboro Jaycees and McDonald’s.
Aerial acrobats will be sponsored by United Healthcare.
Performers who will be strolling through the area include stilt walkers and bubble artists.
The Greensboro Merchants Association is sponsoring a dunk tank with local celebrities such as broadcasters Dave Aiken and Eric Chilton. If they want more participation in the dunk tank they should consider adding a few local politicians to that list.
The evening will end at 9:30 p.m. with a patriotic laser light show in the parking lot at the corner of Market and Davie Streets sponsored by the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the City of Greensboro.
And, yes, that means no fireworks at the 2021 Fun Fourth.
Matheny said, “We did our best to locate a fireworks vendor for this year’s festivities, but, given the short notice, lack of inventory and manpower, it just didn’t come to fruition. I know it’s not ideal to not have fireworks, but this laser show is sure to put us in the red, white and blue spirit.”
