The City of Greensboro’s Human Rights Department and Culture Crew Employee Resource Group are sponsoring an “essential toiletries drive” meant to benefit local refugees.
This is the third straight year the city is conducting the drive, which, in 2024, runs from Wednesday, May 1 to Friday, May 31.
According to drive organizers, the following items are needed: baby powder and wipes, bar soap, conditioner, deodorant, diapers and diaper cream, dish soap and sponges, feminine hygiene products, hand sanitizer, powdered laundry soap, petroleum jelly, shampoo, skin lotion, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.
Organizers are also requesting the donations be “non-bulk-size items” to make delivery of the products easier.
People can contribute to the drive through an Amazon wish list at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2QBNTFPT25J3A?ref_wl_share.
Donations can also be dropped off in bins at the following collection sites on Monday through Friday during the regular business hours of these locations in May:
- Central Library, 219 N. Church St.
- Cultural Arts Center, 200 N. Davie St.
- Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, 800 Westridge Rd.
- Lewis Recreation Center, 3110 Forest Lawn Dr.
- Medford Operations Center, 401 Patton Ave.
- Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 W. Washington St.
The donations will be distributed to refugees who attend the annual World Refugee Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 at Hester Park, which is at 3615 Deutzia St. in Greensboro.
World Refugee Day is sponsored by a host of local organizations.

What country are the “refugees” from? How did they get into our country? Are they part of the male invasion on our borders? A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee their country because of persecution, war, or violence. The current invaders at our borders are not “refugees.” Words have meanings. It is sad that if you look at organization that claim to help the needy a large percentage goes to administration costs and not the people who need the help. The CEO of Goodwill makes over 3m per year. The list goes on and on. Get rid of the red tape and scams.

Donations requested are mostly items that no longer have value to those donating. So how hateful are you that you won’t even consider offering what will essentially become trash to someone? You have to a huge amount of contempt (i.e. hate) to withhold your leftovers from a starving person.

This is such a tired argument. The government is far more efficient handling as organization in partnership with local churches who can pool resources. Personally, I live in a rural community on a farm too far for public transportation to help them land jobs and be near the public services they require to land on their feet. I do donate food, clothes and money through our local church. The phrase is…It Takes A Village.
The goal of each and every immigrant is to work and be a member of a community here in the US. Sure they need a great deal of help as the arrive. But most work hard and pay taxes once they are here and can work legally. Especially refugees.

Every nation has the right to protect its borders and control who it allows into its country. Immigrants who benefit the country in some way are welcome. So we used to get German engineers, Indian surgeons, Japanese musicians, and Italian artists.

I see many refugees and migrants [a.k.a. ‘illegals’] in my home city, which comes close to bordering Washington State. I know that growing numbers of people, regardless of their origin, requiring housing only increases the market-value pressure on the rent rate I pay for my old one-bedroom apartment unit.
I also know there’s greater pressure on the publicly-funded health services here that are already stretched thin.
Still, it would be wrong, if not hypocritical, of me to criticize often-desperate people for doing what I [and many others] likely would do in their dreadful position and if brave enough.
Conveniently ignored by critics of northward mass migration is that many are fleeing global-warming-related extreme weather events and chronic crop failures in the southern hemisphere widely believed to be related to the northern hemisphere’s chronic fossil-fuel burning, beginning with the Industrial Revolution.
Yet, many politicians play political games with migrants — human beings, like the rest of us — while ignoring that they can feel, be hurt and suffer like the rest of us.
In any event, I have a hard time believing that migrants and refugees in general willfully and contently become permanent financial/resource burdens on their northern host nation. Sure there are economic limits to immigration (European countries have recently struggled with this issue) but to ignore the real issues of failing countries to our south takes a good deal of blind ignorance.
