On Sunday, April 28, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office reported that three days earlier, on Thursday, April 25, detectives with the Office’s Major Crimes Investigative Unit charged Skyler Chance Kearns – a 27-year-old – with First-Degree Murder as well as with Concealment of Death.

According to the report from the Sheriff’s Office, the charges filed against Kearns were the result of an ongoing investigation prompted by the missing person’s case of, 52-year-old Stuart Lee Carter, who was first reported missing on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022.

On Friday, April 26 of this year, as part of that long-lasting investigation, detectives with the Major Crimes Investigative Unit working with the assistance of the Triad Blood Hounds Group, conducted a search of a wooded area on Small Road near Randleman Lake Road in Randolph County.

In the course of that search, the group discovered unidentified human remains.

The Medical Examiner’s Office, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority Randleman Lake Warden’s Office were all notified – and all have been assisting with the investigation.

The remains were taken from the scene and will be examined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office notes, “This investigation remains ongoing, and no further details will be released at this time.”

Kearns was taken to the Guilford County jail in downtown Greensboro where he was initially held under no bond until his first court appearance. During his first appearance, Kearns received a $ 1 million bond and he currently remains behind bars.

Sheriff’s officials are asking anyone who has information that may shed light on the case to contact Detective J. Allen at 336-641-2799 or call Guilford County Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
