A Letter from Rhino Reader Austin Morris
It’s really rich to see Gov. Roy Cooper bleat about how he “has a plan” to reduce the cost of groceries.
Gee I dunno Roy, maybe you could start by eliminating the North Carolina Food Tax… You know, the one that was imposed by “Food Tax Terry” Sanford, Democrat, in 1961 – as a temporary tax.
Taxing groceries is extremely regressive, but the Democrats did it anyway. The only relief we’ve ever had was during the late 90’s when Robin Hayes campaigned on, and acted upon, repealing the tax. He got it gradually reduced, but not completely repealed. He was a Republican who believed we should have tax-free food like almost all the other states, but he couldn’t get complete repeal over the line.
Today both Alan Branson and Dennis Riddell (both Republicans) are campaigning on eliminating what’s left of the Food Tax. But the Democrat who’s airing TV ads that promise that he will reduce the cost of our groceries is silent on the matter of the tax! He’s grasping at some straw about variable pricing, which isn’t even a thing.
Why?
Because the Democrats are not the party of the people, the Democrats are the party of government. Repealing the last bit of the Food Tax would impact the revenue of the state, so it’s a No No for the Left. Screw the people, even the poor ones. The bureaucrats and parasites need their money.
And that’s the dirty little secret of the Democrat Party. For all its claims to represent the ordinary guys & gals, they couldn’t care less about us – so long as we keep voting (D).
Their true allegiance is to government in all its forms, and the entire Parasitic Sector.
Government is their God.
At least the GOP is really trying to reduce the cost of our groceries.

Groceries are not a luxury. They are a necessity. Taxing food places an especially unfair burden on lower-income families, seniors living on fixed incomes, and working households already struggling with the cost of living.
If a tax is justified as temporary, Democratic lawmakers should be expected to explain why it remains in place generations later. North Carolina should seriously consider repealing what’s left of the state sales tax on groceries.
With our legislature now wanting to cap property taxes, you can expect your local governments to come up with far more creative ways to fund government.
Austin,
Well said.
You bring bring up a matter that has been behind the scenes for much too long, and point out that this is one of those ‘temporary’ taxes local, state, and federal bloodsuckers (D & R) enjoy imposing on We the People. It is identical to the tax the tax Skip the Omnipotent has tried time and time again to saddle us with and has been not no but hell no. Being suspicious any government action at any level, I can’t help but wonder if the act of putting a voting location on the A&T campus was a clandestine plan by the local (National Socialist) Democrat Party to support Commissar Skip.
Just saying
He is running for a federal office….not a State office where this is an issue. Republicans had a super majority in the legislature when Cooper was Govenor yet only focused on reducing income tax for wealthy and big business.
Want to help reduce costs from the federal level? Don’t start unnecessary wars in the middle east. Dont start trade wars with long time allies. Easy.
Hope that helps. Vote Cooper!

In forty years of North Carolina politicking, Roy Cooper has never raised a finger to eliminate, or even reduce, the Sales Tax on food. Nor has he ever advocated (or accomplished) anything that would reduce the cost of everyday groceries.
As Governor he could easily have led an effort to eliminate the Sales Tax on food. He never even mentioned it.
But now, in the Senate race, he wants to run on the issue. Hypocrisy doesn’t get more blatant than this.
My point is that neither has the super majority party in control of Congress seen sit to change the law. Your argument falls flat in your attempt to blame only Cooper and Democrats for the food tax. Seems to me both parties have not seen the need to change the law. Especially when the time Cooper was actually in a role to make it a priority, he was hamstrung by the conservative super majority in the legislature.
But you be you.
Vote Cooper, let’s bring rationale thought leadership back to Washington!!
Cheers Dappy Doo

And I filled up for $3.59 a gallon yesterday – thanks to the Republican measure to suspend the NC Gas Tax!
It’s another way in which the GOP is trying to help the people of this state.
It was amusing – but not surprising – to see WFMY TV (2) and WGHP TV (8) whine about how much this measure was going to cost the state coffers. They both said it would “cost” over $300 million. What they really meant was that it would put $300 Million back in the pockets of the people of North Carolina.
But Left wing outfits see everything from the state’s position, not the people’s, because the Left represents the interests and desires of the state over the people.
The Left represents government.
The Right represents the governed.
