If you need a break from Christmas shopping this month, the Guilford County Soil and Water Conservation District would like to remind everyone that it’s also time to start thinking about trees, shrubs and even birdhouses.
The District has officially kicked off preorders for its 2026 Annual Tree Seedling Sale, which will run from Monday, Jan. 26 through Friday, Jan. 30, with pickup hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Agricultural Center Barn at 3309 Burlington Road in Greensboro.
This is a long-running winter tradition for the Soil and Water office, and this year’s sale includes a mix of pine seedlings, hardwoods and a few extras for gardeners and backyard wildlife enthusiasts.
White Pines are available in bundles of 20 for $10, while several hardwood species will be sold for $2 each: those options include Eastern Redbud, Mulberry, Crape Myrtle, Dogwood and Sugarberry.
As usual, quantities are limited and the District advises anyone who wants to lock in their order to pre-pay. Preorders must be mailed with payment – checks only – to Friends of Guilford SWCD at the Burlington Road address listed on the order form.
The deadline for mailed payments is Tuesday, Jan. 20.
The flyer for the event also notes that any orders not picked up by January 30 will be resold without a refund.
For anyone who prefers to shop in person, some trees may still be available during the sale week – though that depends entirely on supply.
In addition to seedlings, the District is offering Bluebird boxes for $25, plus two kinds of wildflower seed mixes – a Southeastern mix and a Bird/Butterfly mix – each priced at $7 and covering roughly 400 square feet.
Proceeds from the sale help support the Soil and Water District’s educational programming in Guilford County.
According to Soil and Water officials, printed order forms are being mailed out now and should arrive within the week.
Anyone with questions can contact the office at 336-641-2440.
As always, all sales are cash or check only – no credit cards, no IOUs – and pre-orders must be prepaid if you want to guarantee

What cha gonna do with all those leaves?
Thank you Scott for publishing this information. You have been a friend of Guilford Soil and Water Conservation District over the years. We are a nonpartisan sub-division of the state concerned with issues in Guilford County regarding soil erosion and water quality.
So, the City wants you to plant more trees, but wants you to pay someone to pick them up?
Hypocrapsy squared.
