Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers is a snazzy dresser.
When he shows up at a public event, you never know what to expect – he could, for instance, be sporting a purple cowboy hat, a blue paisley bowtie, a silk blue vest and bright white shoes.
Just one of his many looks.
Anyway, the high sheriff of Guilford County really enjoys making a fashion statement.
However, the uniforms for the officers and deputies who work for Rogers have to be a little more utilitarian and a little less flashy. Now, it appears it’s time for those officers to get some new uniforms.
On Thursday, Nov. 24, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners will hear and approve a request from Rogers to purchase new uniforms at a cost of $500,000.
According to the information the Sheriff’s Office provided to the Board of Commissioners regarding the agenda item, “The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office requires a wide range of uniforms and protective equipment for all law enforcement staff. In North Carolina, cooperative purchasing or group purchasing allows multiple public entities to come together to procure goods or services to achieve cost savings and efficiencies.”
It is common practice for Sheriff’s Offices in the state – and many other local government entities – to get together and bid on items of this sort. By buying together with federal, state or local government agencies, the county gets beneficial pricing due to economies of scale.
In addition to uniforms, the Sheriff’s Office will also be purchasing some bulletproof vests.
From the language in the agenda item, it’s not clear how many uniforms and bullet proof vests the county will get in return for its half a million dollars; however, currently the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department has 662 full time positions.
Vacancy rates for those positions are often high – especially when it comes to detention officers needed to staff the county’s two jails.
The uniforms and protective gear will be purchased from Galls, LLC, which is based out of Secaucus, New York.
Galls, a 50-year-old company that outfits and equips over a million people a year, provides clothing and other items for those in law enforcement, the military, security, EMS, the postal service, public transportation and more.
Holy Crap. Didn’t even use a local vendor.
They have offices in Charlotte, Wilmington & Raleigh. They are based in New York.
The important question is where are the uniforms and BP vests manufactured? Not in NC. The offices mentioned are for sales, you know, meet and greet the municipalities and counties.
Good luck with that policy. The backlash against such a policy could be a problem. Most, if not all, NC manufacturers cannot survive on what’s sold in NC alone. Nor can companies in other states…..You know it’s a little thing called business profitability…….
Somewhere in Guilford County, there is a horse missing it’s cowboy.
This Sheriff’s a joke.
Get an auditor….quick!
My question is why are they replacing them? Is it because they are worn out or is it because they just want new ? And how many are being replaced? Is it the entire uniform for everyone?
With a politician like Rogers, there is always a hidden motive behind his actions. In the case of Rogers and Guilford County Commissioners, ask and it will be given. If the rumors of low morale in the sheriff’s department are true, the guess would be the new uniforms purchase would be to try and boost morale. Rogers, if he runs, is up for reelection in 2026. Skip Alston is setting the stage for 2026. Considering that Rogers likes flash and money, why wouldn’t he run again? What could Rogers do after a stint as sheriff with a salary of over $210,000 of taxpayer money? Not much.
Are the current uniforms worn out? Probably doesn’t figure in, it’s not their money.
Uniforms do wear out rather quickly. Body armor expires every so many years and has to be replaced. The last sheriff had several uniform changes. To outfit a department that large in uniforms and body armor, that cost isn’t that extreme given today’s inflationary prices. Seems like someone is Crying Wolf on this one.
Cowboy Hats and creating a new Sheriff’s Department Logo along with a $50,000 price tag is the work of a narcissist not one sworn to protect the safety of our law-abiding citizens. No problem buying bullet proof vests and tactical gear if they are used? When was the last time Sheriff Danny Rogers conducted a sting, a roadblock, or conducted an aggressive operation designed to cut the crime rate in Guilford County? None of this is needed if all Danny Rogers is going to do is sit behind a desk and play dress up!
We need a visit for Elon and Vivek.
It’s about time our High Sheriff Danny Rogers started focusing on crime and protecting the safety of the Law-Abiding Citizens of Guilford County! Quit dressing like a clown and get out and do your job Danny! If Danny Rogers wants to have a Fashion Show, then he should pay for that with his own personal funds! Add this to the waste of money that Danny spent on Cowboy Hats for his deputies and over $50,000 for a new Sheriff’s Dept. Logo and Badges and you got Government Waste at its best. Who voted for this clown? If you did, I wouldn’t tell anybody!
Totally agree with everything said. Rogers needs to be voted out in 2026. He is wasting tax payers money.
The only way to help stop things we don’t like is to remember this on Election Day
How about the dept do their jobs. They are scared of the illegals in the county and don’t prosecute the legal gang members that are wreaking havoc on the Southeast side of the county. Do your job and that’s not dressing like a pimp
Clown.
Yikes! We must be RICH!
You going to spend a half a million dollars on the uniforms meanwhile discard a half a million dollars or more in uniforms that are current and being worn by the staff. But apparently this year’s recent change because they were hiring below standards staff they had to provide uniforms in order for them to wear something more presentable. So every staff member of the sheriff’s office now is required to being uniform that’s including civilians. That’s right even the girls that worked the desk in the legal process division are required to wear a uniform. Meanwhile the current uniforms are mismatched so bad that no longer follow within guidelines of policy. You got bailiffs who should be in class A uniforms while on duty in the courtrooms OR wearing tactical body armor. You got employees who are so overweight that they have to buy extra material in uniforms just the outfit the staff. Lord have mercy is it never going to stop spending the money of taxpayers. They need to do a Jenny Craig for the sheriff’s office. I’d rather than spend a half million dollars on health and eating habits of their employees. Half the Detention officers are obese. I give up there’s never an end to this madness.
We all need to register as democrats or independents so we can primary him out .
Nice idea but what Democrat is going to run against him?
Don’t bother to switch parties, it could ruin your reputation! Just save your vote for Phil Byrd. He is the most qualified and experienced Law Enforcement Officer in Guilford County to be our next Sheriff!
No, we as Republicans and Independant’s need to show up like we did for Trump and vote this clown out, so we don’t pay higher taxes and they don’t have this kind of waste, vacancies and high crime. Billy Queen ran for Sheriff last election and I think he is going to run again. That guy has done some things, continues to teach locally and is requested out of state at Law Enforcement conferences. I was told he is a Pilot and has been flying his own plane to carry supplies, heaters and items to the residents of Western NC. He gets things done. Lets all get behind him and vote him in.
Yeah, Billy Queen is the Retired ATF Agent who wrote two books, and I hear a lot of good things about him. He is taking clothing and heaters from his church in Oak Ridge on his personal plane on his time and his money to help these people who are struggling. 2026 will be here soon.
I’m unsure about the Guilford County Sheriff’s office spending $500,000 on new uniforms, but since the old pattern from the ’60s is out of date. Perhaps it’s time to modernize the uniform look. Those Class A uniforms are quite unflattering and could use an update. I agree with Danny on this one; they’re in dire need of a refresh. Trust me if you put a vote out on issue a new uniforms and getting rid of the old class A uniforms I think he would come out okay on this one. And me of all people and agreeing with them on this one but maybe phase the old uniform out. But they still got the black BDU so it’ll be a process. The class A is really an ugly uniform. No matter how good you make it you can’t make it look great.
The County Commissioners have ridiculous priorities. Imagine the number of animals they could save with 1/2 a million dollars put into fixing the appalling conditions at the animal shelter. They would rather kill cats and dogs than even allow the head of the shelter to speak at meetings! But hey, those sheriffs sure look snazzy. Reprehensible.
$500 K could really help the Animal Shelter. The Sheriff’s Department looks ok, except for the Cowboy Sheriff, the way overweight employees who I imagine are a health risk. The beards look scraggly too, not a very professional appearance. Oh, and the over 120 vacancies, they don’t need uniforms. My opinion, send the money to the Animal Shelter
Don’t get me wrong…BJ was a hot a-mess…(I don’t care what you all say), but this joker is too! Uniforms over the things that really matter. WTH is wrong with Guilford County….not just the sheriff’s dept but the county as a whole. We’re definitely moving backwards….
What we need in this County is a benign autocrat. I volunteer.
Will they all get cowboy hats?
