The government’s mantra for dealing with COVID-19 is follow the science, data, facts and the directions of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In the beginning there wasn’t much data since COVID-19 was caused by a new virus, but now there is a wealth of data, some of which is being ignored – as in the case of cleaning and disinfecting everything that anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 may have touched.
Courthouses and other public buildings across the state are being closed because someone who was in the building tested positive for COVID-19.
Monday, Oct. 19, the Greensboro Central Library was closed for the day to be cleaned because an employee tested positive for COVID-19.
On Friday Oct. 16, Greensboro city hall was closed for the day to be cleaned because a contract worker had tested positive for COVID-19.
The buildings were closed because they had to be deep cleaned to prevent anyone from contracting COVID-19 from a surface touched by someone who had tested positive. But the CDC webpage titled “Cleaning and Disinfecting for Community Facilities” states, “Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented.”
The CDC covers the entire United States and in the US over 8.5 million people have tested positive for COVID-19. Out of those 8.5 million cases not a single health official in the country has been able to document one case where a person contracted COVID-19 from touching a surface.
Closing city hall is no small feat. The offices located in city hall include Bill Payments/Collections, Budget and Evaluation, City Clerk’s Office, City Manager’s Office, Development Services, Economic Development and Small Business Office, Engineering and Inspections, Financial and Administrative Services, Greensboro Television Network, Human Rights, Human Resources/Employment Office, Information Technology, City Contact Center, Legal Department, Mayor and City Council Offices, Neighborhood Development, Parking Enforcement, Planning and Police Administration.
So if the science is being followed, why is the city spending thousands of dollars closing down buildings and disinfecting every surface since according to the CDC that is not how COVID-19 is spread?
It is not following science, data and facts to spend untold time and effort doing something because it makes people feel better.
Follow the money. Who is profiting?
You go, John Hammer 🙂
The schools are planning to misuse our resources doing the same thing…if they ever open.
Exactly…
It’s always better to side with caution. Why does disinfectants sprays like lysol and others state that it kills bacteria such as covid-2 ?
Covid is a virus—-not a bacteria! More difficult to deal with, and bacterial wipes don’t necessarily help.
Not that I don’t think that we have a serious Covid overreaction going on, but “Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented.” is not proof or data that you can’t get infected from surfaces. If you can get Covid from droplets in the air, those same droplets can land on surfaces. I’m sure the particles degrade, especially over time, however, nothing has proved you CANNOT obtain the virus from surfaces. Look at how long people thought you couldn’t get AIDS unless you were gay, received blood from an infected homosexual, or a drug needle user. There weren’t many cases of AIDS in heterosexuals that didn’t use drugs early on.
The folks “in charge” of everything say they are “following the science” and guidelines from the CDC. But in fact they have not read and/or understand what is scientifically being said.
Maybe they get their official info from CNN!
Maybe they don’t blindly trust a federal agency with appointed leadership especially when there are other (often better) sources of information.
You can catch covid by exposure to day old pimento cheese.
I don’t think that it is impossible to catch the Covid from surface contact, I think it is just much less likely than direct person-to-person contact.
It’s always about how people “feel” and never about how things really are. Few decisions are based on reason or fact but most are based on feelings and emotion. It’s a fearful and dangerous world we live in and those who prefer reason over emotion are ancients in a modern world, hoping.
Your not quoting a scientific study here are you? It seems like your drawing your own unqualified conclusions and distributing them to the public.
Contaminated surfaces aren’t the highest COVID-19 risk. Tests have found traces of COVID-19 on surfaces, but no research has established that the virus is viable in those places, partly because research has veered in other directions.
The key is no research has been established due to other priorities. Bit reckless to point fingers at organizations taking an abundance of caution given the recent surge in reported cases. Especially our schools, as we all know that schools are a great purveyor of spreading germs.
Given the surge in recent cases and hospitalizations across the country I would hope we all support the idea of using an abundance of caution as it could very well save lives. No one thing can stop the spread. Wear a mask, maintain separation from others in public, wash hands, and keep public spaces clean and disinfected.
Just a thought.
According to the CDC website, in particular the directions for detailed disinfecting guidance for facilities:”Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID 19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in community settings.” If you’re gonna quote something, give people the whole story.
