Since AI requires huge data centers and seemingly infinite power to run – and since there’s a wholelot of money to be made in AI – a lot of people have stopped caring what that might do to the environment of the planet (not to mention what the autonomous Skynet-led robots will do to us in the end).

However, not everyone has given up on saving the planet: The City of Greensboro, for instance, is still giving it the old college try.

And even though city leaders can’t stop the overall destruction of the planet, they can help area residents make small local changes in their daily behavior by encouraging actions such as recycling, composting, not spraying gallons of Roundup all over the place, and by finding new uses for things rather than just tossing them in the trash can.

The City’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience along with its department and community partners plan to celebrate Earth Day with a festival from noon to 4 pm, on Saturday, April 25, at Keeley Park.

Visitor parking will be available at the sprayground parking lot at 4110 Keeley Road in McLeansville and the festivities will be near the sprayground parking lot and designated with a marked walking trail.

There will also be an accessible-friendly shuttle that will be operating throughout the event.

Here’s the city’s description of the local Earth Day 2026 celebration: “This free, all-ages event will feature environmental workshops, 50+ community organizations, Eco Bus animal experiences, guided nature walks, kid zone, and a native plant giveaway. Food can be purchased at Taqueria El Azteca & Taco Truck, Scoop Zone, Lucian’s Flame, Jamaica Coast Catering, and The Local & The Lebanese food trucks. Play Earth Day BINGO to win an event t-shirt.”

Throughout the day, workshops will be held.  Here’s the schedule:

  • 12:30 – 1 pm: Sustainable Insect Pest Management

  • 1:15 – 1:45 pm: Beyond the Blue Bin: Your Donation’s Second Chance

  • 2 – 2:30 pm: Saving Nature with Your Yard: Homegrown National Parks

  • 2:45 – 3:15 pm: The Quick and Dirty on Composting: A Beginner’s Guide

  • 3:30 – 4 pm: Green Spring Cleaning: Make a DIY Eco-Friendly Cleaning Solution

The City’s Earth Day is being sponsored by PPG, NEEF, Duke Energy, Granville Homes, SELS, Sierra Club Foundation, and T Gilbert Pearson Audubon Society. Those interested can find a full list of exhibitors and other information at www.greensboro-nc.gov/earthday. (Though some people have had trouble getting that page to load in recent days).
