On Tuesday, Sept. 20, the City Council held a closed session to evaluate City Manager Tai Jaiyeoba.
According to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment, the evaluation didn’t go well for Jaiyeoba, who took over as city manager on Feb. 1.
Only eight members of the City Council were present for the evaluation – District 3 City Councilmember Zack Matheny was not present for the closed session. Matheny is the only new member of the City Council elected in the unprecedented July 26 general election.
Matheny, however, sent an email Jaiyeoba and copied his fellow councilmembers on Monday, Sept. 26 about some of the issues he has with the city manager.
Matheny begins, “I am really disappointed in the lack of communication in bringing me online as the new city councilman for District 3.”
Matheny notes that he saw what appeared to be new sidewalks being installed on Willoughby Boulevard and states, “I would think the manager would want the District Representative to be informed of projects happening in their district as they come on as the new representative to avoid constituent calls, to alert of potential issues, etc. This is a list of items that continues to grow because of the lack of information, onboarded, etc. that continues to show a lack of communication.”
The Rhino Times has written several articles about how difficult it has become, since Jaiyeoba became city manager, for the public to get information about upcoming City Council meetings, and according to Matheny it’s not just the public that is not being informed but also at least one member of the City Council.
Matheny states, “It would be helpful if someone on staff communicated appropriately in advance when meetings will or will not be held.”
He adds, “Mr. Manager, I can only imagine what I have not been properly informed of, which will only continue to create significant issues at city council work sessions and meetings.”
Matheny ends by stating, “My hope is you will correct these extraordinary communication issues, as Councilwoman Hightower says often, I feel left in the dark.”
The current City Manager needs to go. There is no excuse for this lack of transparency and lack of information to the council. He needs to go!!
The only logical action to be taken is to terminate Jaiyeoba’s employment as soon as possible before he does any more damage to our city! How could the city council have hired a more incompetent individual?
How? He’s a minority and he’s very woke … thus he checked 2 of the 4 boxes needed for consideration. Had there been a woke minority lesbian with experience, rest assured they would have hired her over this guy as she would have checked all 4 boxes.
Hey Zack please do not let him have final say on the police chief. Also, he doesn’t give information because he has no clue what he is doing.
Tai Jaiyeoba was never a good fit. He’s just one more oversized ego in Guilford County and Greensboro government. Bye Bye Tai!
Fire the City Manager.
Not surprised at all. If he earned then received a poor review, why is he still employed here? I believe most residents already know the answer on his employment status. Council is all talk.
Taiwo Jaiyeoba is an African Marxist who seems to believe that the title of City Manager means what it does in his native Nigeria – dictator of the city.
Somebody needs to apprise him that he’s in America, where he’s just a minor employee of a democratically elected council in a small Southern town. He’s not their boss. He should be grateful that we pay him $6,000 a week (true) to promote his extremist Left wing agenda, and support him and his 7 kids ( no typo – seven children. So much for population control and saving the planet….).
He needs to go.
Why would it matter if he had 28 kids? That’s his business. Stick to the matter at hand, no cheap shots. It diminishes you when you do that.
It’s relevant because the Climate Cult zealots of the Left believe the World is severely overpopulated. In fact, they see global warming and natural resource depletion exclusively as a result of overpopulation.
Got it now?
I hear your argument; however, bringing his ethnic background into his competence as a City Manager doesn’t make sense. Please refrain from insulting other native nations while trying to critique their work, cause quite frankly, I think he knows he’s in America. We all do….thank you!
Good Job Councilman Matheny. If you think you aren’t being informed think about us, the ordinary citizen. He doesn’t take citizen calls or appointments. He doesn’t want to bothered with citizens. Let him go…. He acts as though he is better than ordinary citizens. How is he supposed to deal with our issues of homelessness, zoning, participatory budgeting, and more. A City Manager must be engaged with not only the Council, but the people.
Too bad the city did away with performance evaluations that hold any weight as well as their disciplinary system. I believe they just have “conversations” about performance issues and ask the employee to “do better”. So now you’re stuck with the guy. In fact, I would almost be willing to bet he gets a raise the next time raises come around.
You can rest assured that this guy has found a new home. He is not going anywhere anytime soon. This council loves him.
Zack Matheny is no nonsense and speaks truthfully. The city manager is clearly holding back information from city leaders and the public. It can’t go on because these actions effect Greensboro. The City Council should fix the situation immediately.
This reporting is irresponsible and a perfect example of why there is so much discord and misinformation in our country. Ridiculous.
You’re blaming the messenger for the message, dear.
Yadda….yadda….yadda. Everyone knew this guy was a $280,000 per year JOKE from the beginning…..it was a “virtue signal hire” and now we all must revel in its glory. The only real question here is how big will his “virtue signal raise” be ??
Zack Matheny, look at it this way you are the wrong color my friend.
As the only who may have had any constructive criticism, it would have been nice Zack had been present.
Another “blown”hire who might look good on paper.
This CREEP is the reason that there are so many employee vacancies in city government!!!!! Who on earth would want to work for this freak. Let us make Greensboro a better place to work and live. GET RID OF THIS JACK ASS CREEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok. Didn’t they just hire additional people to help Tai with doing the job where past city managers did it alone?
I imagine it would be a very hard job for a non-partisan individual let alone one who has shown a total willingness to be unfair in decision making. (ex – forcing the press to sit where they could not adequately cover the city council)
Greensboro’s city government seems to be less transparent than before and at a higher price tag, albeit arguably marginal, due to the additional employees hired.
Once again I’m so glad not to live in GSO
He should be fired!
This City Manger was a bad decision. Send him back to Africa.
