In a USA Today Readers’ Choice Poll, readers have nominated Piedmont Triad International Airport as one of the 20 Best Small Airports in the country, and, while that’s a nice honor, PTI airport officials want to be known as the flat-out number 1 best in the country.

And PTI staff have come up with a plan to make that happen: They’re asking everyone in the community to go online and vote PTI as the best small airport.

They are, like all the candidates running for election this year, asking for your help.

Unlike in the upcoming November election, however, everyone can vote more than once.

“We need our community’s help to push us over the finish line,” a Thursday, Sept. 5 press release from the airport pleaded.

There’s a lot to like about the airport: Major upgrades have been made over the last 10 years and, while you may save a few dollars driving to Raleigh or Charlotte, the savings are mostly lost to gas and parking fees – not to mention all the commotion and long lines at the state’s two largest airports.

Users can vote once per day for PTI on each of their web-enabled devices (such as

smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers).  So, most people could at least throw four or five votes the airport’s way every day.  You can bet that PTI Airport Executive Director Kevin Baker has his entire family and probably even his buddies from his graduating class at Lehigh University voting on every device they have every day.

A total of 20 small airports are in the running for this award. The winner will be chosen based on the number of votes.

Voting is going on now and will continue until Monday, September 23 at 11:59 a.m.

Currently, PTI is 12th, with airports in Grand Rapids and Myrtle Beach at the number 1 and 2 spots.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at noon.

“Please support your hometown airport by voting for us daily and sharing this poll with your family and friends,” airport staff requests.

Also, though the airport didn’t ask for this, if there are any good hackers in the area reading this, local law enforcement would probably look the other way if you came up with a program that could vote thousands of times a day by disguising the device’s web address.
