People who live in, work in, or just frequent South Greensboro are being invited by City of Greensboro staff to get involved with the formation of the brand new South Greensboro Plan.
On Thursday, Sept. 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., city staff will conduct South Greensboro’s “Vision Workshop” at TMSA Triad Elementary School at 600 Industrial Ave.
This kickoff meeting will include discussions and exercises designed to identify major “issues and opportunities” for the people who live, work or shop in this part of Greensboro.
According to city officials, this September 12 meeting will be the first in a series of meetings that will take place over the course of the planning process.
The ultimate goal, according to the public invitation, is for City of Greensboro staff and residents to join together and plan out South Greensboro’s future.
“This workshop is part of the city’s effort to work with area residents to study critical issues and creative solutions to improve South Greensboro’s quality of life and guide its future growth,” the statement from the city reads. “Once developed and adopted in late 2025, the South Greensboro Plan will help City staff, residents, business owners and decision-makers lead the way into a more prosperous, safe, and closely-knit community.”
Staff from several city departments will be involved in studying the issues, identifying problems and offering solutions.
In the future, there will be neighborhood workshops, planning events, surveys of residents and a great deal of discussion about the best options.
Once the plan is formulated and adopted by the Greensboro City Council – something expected to happen in late 2025 – parts of the plan will be implemented.
In recent years, the city of Greensboro has created a number of plans focused on specific areas of the city in attempts to make life better by doing things such as reducing speeding, beautifying the area, installing better lighting and finding ways to make those places safer.
In the case of the South Greensboro Plan, the city highlighted the following “themes”…
- Impact on neighborhoods of industrial uses located near highways, in particular commercial and truck traffic.
- Abrupt transitions between land uses.
- Annexations and rezoning on the southern boundary of Greensboro.
- Providing adequate park facilities, green space and increased trail connectivity.
- Stormwater management in green space-oriented around creeks.
- Property upkeep in commercial areas.
- Multifamily, highway-oriented commercial uses, and industrial uses associated with existing freeways.
- The desire for adequate retail, banking, and other services in many parts of the community.
One goal of the plan is to protect the cultural identity of the area.
City officials state: “This activity gathers critical insight on spaces, places, histories and people of the study area that form the cultural fabric, as well as envisioning ways to honor, protect and grow the culture of communities in South Greensboro.”
Why, all of a sudden, is the Greensboro City Council of Lords and Ladies (All Hail This Illustrious Collection of All-Knowing) looking at offering up improvements and bennies to this area after ignoring it for so long. I’m thinking it might, MIGHT have something to do with a this thing going in just over the county line. What was it….darn, what was the name again?
One thing you can call it is; flight of capital (as I am doing). Another could be vote-buying…..
For sure. And more will follow.
Totally……
