A Guilford County inmate who managed to slip out of her restraints and flee from a hospital room on Friday morning didn’t make it very far before getting caught.
According to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old Victoria Marie Jones was receiving medical treatment at a local hospital when she escaped from custody at about 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 19.
Jones had been transported to the hospital the previous day from the Greensboro Detention Center.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that inmates who receive medical treatment outside the detention center are accompanied by an armed Detention Services officer. Additional personnel can be assigned depending on factors such as the inmate’s criminal history, bond amount, charge classification or behavioral concerns.
According to the sheriff’s office, none of those factors applied in Jones’ case and she was being supervised by a single Detention Services officer.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that Jones was secured to a hospital bed with physical restraints when the officer briefly entered a restroom located inside the hospital room.
While the officer was in the restroom, Jones reportedly slipped out of the restraints, ran into the hallway, entered an elevator and made her way to the first floor of the hospital.
Her escape attempt was short-lived: A hospital security officer quickly apprehended Jones before she was able to leave the building. Jones had made it from her hospital room to the first floor of the hospital before being stopped by security.
She was charged with misdemeanor escape from a county or city confinement facility and returned to the Greensboro Detention Center. The new charge carries an $11,000 secured bond.
Jones was originally arrested by the Greensboro Police Department on May 10 and she had remained in custody under an $8,000 secured bond.
According to jail records, she was being held on two counts of felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony obtaining property by false pretenses, felony financial transaction card fraud, felony conspiracy and three counts of felony failure to appear on a felony charge.
The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Division has opened an internal investigation into the incident.

FELONY ROBBERY WITH A DANGEROUS WEAPON 2 counts should qualify for a second guard. How many dangerous weapons might be found in a hospital. If not a second guard, simply asking the nurse to stand by for a bathroom break. Training and common sense seem to be missing here.
Mr. Barnes, as a former employee of Moses Cone Hospital as a nurse in the emergency room I’m appalled that you would suggest a nurse watch a suspect for a deputy. We are responsible for multiple patients at a time and have to be available to respond to our own patients medical needs/emergencies as they arise. We are not liable to watch your detainee no matter how small the matter might seem.

Agreed. The responsibility lies completely on the law enforcement agencies, not hospital staff. Why was one, not two deputies sent with an individual charged with felonies? True not convicted however charged.

An $8000.00 bond for all of these felony charges? Are you kidding me? Three counts of failure to appear? This is beyond ridiculous. So finally, she gets an additional $11000.00 bond for escape. Imagine that.
I’ve been keeping up with this situation. Today, a case went before Judge Foster, who has been described as a personal friend of Sheriff Danny Rogers, and the bond was reportedly lowered to $25. That is a big change and has people asking questions.
The female who recently escaped was being held on a robbery charge, which is also raising concerns about how these decisions are being made.
At what point does the state step in and review what is going on to make sure everything is fair and transparent?”

So when ex sheriff Barnes was in office and one of his long time deputies stopped at a convenience store while transporting prisoners and an escape happened was that a lack of training or just poor leadership? If you’re gonna point fingers remember the skeletons in your own closet.
