On Thursday, April 22, former Greensboro Zoning Commissioner Tony Collins sent a letter of apology by email to each member of the Greensboro City Council.
On Tuesday, April 20, the Greensboro City Council voted unanimously to remove Collins from the Zoning Commission for his behavior at the Monday, April 19 Zoning Commission meeting.
At that meeting a speaker on an issue before the Zoning Commission, Carrie Rosario, who is a doctor of public health in health education, repeatedly interrupted Collins asking that he refer to her as “Dr. Rosario,” and Collins refused. The City Council watched a short video clip of the exchange between Collins and Rosario before voting to remove him. Councilmember Sharon Hightower brought the incident to the City Council’s attention, provided the video and insisted that Collins be removed. Good Morning Members of the Greensboro City Council,
I understand from published reports that you voted Tuesday evening to remove me from the Greensboro Zoning Commission because of my behavior at the Zoning Commission meeting Monday evening. I agree with you that my exchange with Dr. Rosario was out of line and accept your judgment to remove me from the commission. I have telephoned Dr. Rosario and left a message apologizing for my behavior.
I would also like to publicly apologize to Dr. Rosario, the Zoning Commission and to the City Council. There is no good excuse for my interaction with Dr. Rosario so I will not try to offer one. Citizens deserve better. I would never want to bring any harm to the City of Greensboro or to any of our citizens. I failed to live up to my own standards and to yours. I regret that sincerely. I’ve worked at a company where there were scientist who were doctors, and we addressed them as Dr. unless they said otherwise. Certainly if I was told to address a person using their well-earned title of Dr., I would do so without hesitation and with apology.

I don’t care what race someone is, a medical doctor earns the title of doctor. A doctorate degree you can get online and part-time does NOT earn demands of a title to every human you meet.

Most commenters here also don’t know that science research PhDs are often uncomfortable using the title Doctor when they really do earn it (7 year program). They don’t use it because they work with doctors, and they respect their role.

I have to appear in front of the area’s Planning Commissioners and City Council members from time to time as an architect. Disrespect from members is not uncommon. I often want to say that you are suppose to serve the public and not use your position as a power-trip. But, for the sake of the project owners, and their projects we have to swallow it.
Geez, everybody is so SEnsitIvE these days. For those above who accused me of bringing politics into this, EVERYTHING is politics these day. I assumed nothing – I accused those on the left of of demonizing this man – that was not directed at the doctor, it was directed at those who fired him.
EVERYONE on the left these days just goes around looking for something to be offended at. And when they can’t find something that offends them, they’ll look for something that should offend someone else. I don’t care what people call me. Where did all the commentators come from? Is this story getting national attention or something? They seem to be missing basic facts, such as 1) the woman is not a medical doctor, 2) she didn’t list her title on her Zoom name or correct a previous speaker who didn’t say Doctor, 3) the commissioner was a volunteer and thus did not “lose his job”, 4) the Greensboro city council has totally lost its grasp of reality.
I watched cnn run a segment about this discussion today, and as usual, they couldn’t help themselves and said another gentleman did not call her Doctor and the Doctor corrected him and he apologized and everyone moved forward. The meeting was four hours discussing zoning around Greensboro NC. I still haven’t figured out how the Doctor was invited to this meeting. I watched the meeting and I must have missed the part where the Doctor corrected the other gentleman in the meeting and missed the part where he apologized to the Doctor like cnn said that was what happen. The Doctor only went after the white man, I didn’t see her go after the gentleman that was black. If a white woman goes after a black person, the news labels her white Karen, no matter her name, should we start labeling all black women Ebony when they only go after white men, and not go after black men?
