There is little that works quite as well as money as an enticement.
Downtown Greensboro Inc. (DGI) is using an opportunity to win $500 to encourage people to not just visit, but spend money in downtown Greensboro.
DGI has launched the #DGSOtogo Contest with the tagline, “Support Local to Win Money.” Those who accept the challenge have the opportunity to win $500 for themselves and for the business where they spent the money.
The way #DGSOtogo works is that when someone dines or shops in person, orders takeout, gift cards or even shops online and spends a minimum of $25 at a downtown business, they can upload a photo of their signed receipt to be entered into a weekly drawing for $500.
Not only will the lucky winner receive $500, but the business on the receipt will also win $500. It is a bona fide win-win situation.
Along with the $500 winner, four other weekly winners will receive local business gift cards and/or merchandise from a downtown business.
DGI plans to raise enough in donations from corporate sponsors to continue the contest for at least 12 weeks.
According to DGI, if every family spent an additional $10 per month at a local shop, the result would be an additional $9.3 billion in the local economy.
President and CEO of DGI Zack Matheny in a press release said, “Following the rush of the holiday season, January and February have traditionally been slow months for our small businesses. Add in the continued effects of the pandemic, and now more than ever we need to come together as a community to support each other. #DGSOtogo aims to support not just our small business owners, but those people who choose to support local in the Center City.”

How is DGI funded? The $500? Taxpayer money? This sounds like a bribe to me.
Downtown Greensboro seemed to be dead 2 days ago when my dog and l drove several streets. the hippy store in south Greensboro was the only one we saw with several customers .
Only the dog knows….
I wouldn’t even take my dog downtown.
