The City of Greensboro is asking residents to help furnish homes for people transitioning out of homelessness through a new program called Housing First Plus.
According to a city press release issued Thursday, May 8, the city’s Community Safety Department is seeking donations of furniture and household items for the initiative – which is designed to move some of Greensboro’s most vulnerable residents from the street into stable housing while also providing intensive case management services.
The pilot program will work with 20 people and it combines intensive case management with incentives and support for participating landlords. The city said that some clients could begin moving into unfurnished homes as early as Monday, June 1.
City leaders are asking for donations of both “Welcome Home Baskets” and larger furniture items.
The city listed the following needs:
Welcome Home Baskets (Given to each client when they move into housing)…
Furniture Needed for Each Client’s Home:
- Laundry basket filled with the following household items:
- Key chain/lanyard
- Cleaning supplies – glass spray, sponges, bleach, dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent
- Paper towels and toilet paper
- Shower curtain and hooks
- Trash can and trash bags
- Bath and kitchen towels, washcloths
- Hangers
- Pillow, comforter and sheets (queen)
- Plates and cups
- Basic kitchen utensils
- Pots and pans
- Broom and dustpan
Furniture Needed for Each Client’s Home:
- Mattress, box spring, and bedframe
- Nightstand
- Bedroom dresser
- Lamps
- Chair
- Small couch
- Coffee table
- TV and TV stand
- Small kitchen table with two chairs

According to the city, the Community Safety Department focuses on public safety initiatives that include violence prevention, crisis intervention services and intensive case management for people dealing with issues such as mental health challenges, substance abuse and homelessness.
