Memorial Day, Monday, May 29 – considered by many to be the beginning of summer – is a city holiday, which means most city offices are closed.

Traditional Memorial Day is Tuesday, May 30, and not a holiday.

A Monday holiday means the garbage, yard waste and recycling collection normally scheduled for Monday, May 29 will take place on Tuesday, May 30.  The garbage, yard waste and recycling collection normally scheduled for Tuesday, May 30 will take place on Wednesday, May 31.

In November 2022, the city implemented fines for leaving garbage or recycling bins on the street for more than 48 hours.  According to the city press release, residents can be fined $25 for placing their garbage or recycling bins on the street prior to 7 a.m. the day before collection.  So, residents who normally have Monday collection and take their garbage and recycling bins to the street on Sunday evening could be fined. Those with regular Tuesday collection who take their bins to the street on Monday evening could also be fined.

However, since Monday is a city holiday, it is unlikely that the garbage and recycling enforcement police will be out and about writing tickets.

The White Street Landfill and the Transfer Station will both be closed on Monday, May 29.

If your normal collection day is Thursday or Friday, your collection schedule will not be affected.
