The headline stealing Guilford County contract snafu of all time is the stunning and total collapse of the contract Guilford County had with Samet Construction to build a new Sheriff’s Department headquarters.

That giant falling is leading to delays in that project, but it turns out other county renovation projects will see long delays as well.

A project that has been on the drawing board for a long time is the repair and renovation of the parking decks at and near the county-owned Truist Bank Building

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners has been talking about that for a long time and now the project is facing a new delay of about a year and half.

Guilford County awarded the contract to WGI Inc. for the design, bidding and construction administration for the Truist deck and Plaza deck.   According to those original contracts, the completion date for the project was Sunday, April 30, 2023.

However, that day has come and gone and the work “for the design, bidding and construction administration for the Truist deck and Plaza deck,” remains incomplete.

Now that project – assuming no further delays – will be complete one day before Halloween.  But not by Halloween of this year – but Halloween of next year

Information provide by facilities staff to the county commissioners states that “Due to delays in design as a result of site conditions and design approvals, purchasing schedule needs, permitting delays and construction scheduling delays, the contract end date needs to change to October 30, 2024.”

It adds that this contract extension will allow WGI to wrap up construction close-outs, punch lists and final billing.
