Bike Lanes But No Bikes
Dear Editor,
Whose bright idea was it to take away lanes between Gate City Boulevard to Spring Garden Street for bike access?
I have lived here since the early ’80s and I have never seen a bike on that section of the road. Man, it is a mess up at Spring Garden Street.

if u have wide, pedestrian free sidewalks, why risk life n limb biking in road ? experienced biker here with NO close calls recommends max distance from all MV’s . just wait ! let them pass ! go behind ! eye contact !
It is happening ALL OVER GREENSBORO! It is so STUPID!!! Why should OUR TAX PAYER MONEY GO TO MAKE OUR STREETS SMALLER?!?!?! Every place that they have put these bike tracks, there are NEVER ANY BIKE RIDERS, EVER!!! Most of the bike riders are on country roads, so that they hold up traffic to anyone trying to get by.
Bike Lanes are not about bikes – or you would see people on bikes using them. Bike Lanes are one of the techniques used by climate extremists and Leftists who despise and resent the private automobile. They want to choke our roads, reducing their capacity as arterial plaque reduces your blood pumping capacity. That’s why they are always trying to cut speed limits lower and lower. Their strategy is to make driving as time consuming, costly, frustrating, and impossible as they can. They want to drive us onto “public transportation” like cattle, and ultimately reduce our freedom of movement to 15 minute zones, or “15 Minute Cities”. That means we will not be allowed out of our “zone” unless we apply for a permit from our masters.
I know this sounds crazy, but it’s already being implemented in European cities like Ghent, Oxford, and Canterbury.
Bike Lanes are just the first step. They couldn’t care less if no-one ever bicycles in them. That’s not the point.
Totally spot-on Austin–thanks for your comments.
Thanks Jim! I tend to agree with your comments too! And letters.
Or maybe. Just maybe. Climate change is real. Is caused by man. And is a real risk to global stability long term.
But I fully understand you think you are smarter than all of the actual climate scientists out there.
But I know you are not very smart. Just a hateful person who would rather buy into the unproven conspiracy theories funded by those that profit off of misinformation. You know. Like a sheep.
(Yes I know you will misquote past scientific statements or studies on climate science to promote your misinformation…..with no credible sources of course.) Yawn.
Yes, they are “road diets”, going on all over California for the last few years. People should be looking up information on the “15 Minute Cities”, it’s truly frightening that they are trying to do this plan in a retro way instead of planning ahead with new areas instead. The bottom line is it’s a huge and intricate plan which will eventually mean we will travel nowhere and love it.
You’re right, Zuzu. It’s the most Leftist states and countries that are the furthest down this road. That’s because Leftism is ultimately inherently totalitarian. They’re trying to make us into serfs.
Don’t buy their “Vision Zero” and “If it saves a single life…” propaganda. They’re trying to sell us our own enslavement.
Nor will you ever discover whose bright idea it was since accountability is never to be seen in this town. I’m still trying to find out who came up with the idea of “Grasshoppers” for the baseball team.
Jiminey D Cricket, It was his second choice.
Not only bikers, but also pedestrian sidewalks. Neither are hardly used; and are a huge waste of taxpayer money.
These are do-gooder make-work projects. The are plenty of roads all over town that need maintenance.
When I biked around town for exercise outdoors, I always used the sidewalk for safety. Drivers ignore bikers leaving parking lots or a side street.
I like sidewalks…Seniors can get a walk in and kids ride rheir bikes off the street
Council members,
We have recently had an extremely large tax increase, bond and leftover Federal Covid funds. With such major funds in hand, it is excellent time to show the MAJORITY of City resident’s that you understand the only reason for the council to exist is to support them!
However, such an understanding is not in evidence based on the overall poor condition of our infrastructure.
Our once acclaimed streets are largely in disrepair. I am told there is not even an ongoing plan in existence to address this.
Our sewer and water systems are barely holding on, such as in Guilford Hills, and in many areas are stretched beyond designed capacity.
I am told no plan exists to remedy.
Clearly, the council must spend whatever time is required to meet their Baseline responsibility to the CITY OF GREENSBORO!
It seems that is not the case! Rather, it seems special interest groups and small segments of residents are getting a lot of COUNCIL time spent on their special interests.
While these small but important special needs are met, the COUNCIL is OBVIOUSLY not spending adequate time nor funding to catch up for the years of infrastructure neglect.
The COUNCIL needs to prioritize its basic infrastructure maintenance responsibilities and its responsibility to the majority citizenry!
These poor conditions effect EVERYONE!
The underserved majority has paid for this work! We don’t need more talk, Nor pandering.
WE need to SEE an ongoing major repair and update of the entire infrastructure!
I’ve seen this movie before. As government gets increasingly arrogant and self-serving, so it intentionally neglects its basic responsibilities in order to fund pet projects and Left wing causes.
Just look at the senile octogenarian’s administration as it fails in its most fundamental duty – defending the border – but hoses away billions on leftist projects and organizations.
