Doesn’t Trust Local Government
Dear Editor,
FOX 8 is reporting the former American Hebrew Academy is going to be used as a “transitional facility for immigrant children”.
It appears they left out the word “illegal.”
There is no current number on how many or if there is any age limit to who will be housed. Seeing what has been happening in places like NYC, one has to wonder if this is something that is going to be coming to our area.
The other thing is as of now, it is going to be used to house children, but like any government run facility, one has to wonder how long before we look back at this as the ‘camel’s nose under the tent’ moment and start seeing “families” being housed there. After all, how can we break up families? And how temporary is “temporary?” How long before the “older children” are being released from the facility because of overcrowding? I’m sorry but I have this inherent fear of any government promises. The American Indians and how they were “promised their own land” comes to mind. How did that work out?
As much as it bothers me to say this, I cannot trust our county government and I definitely don’t trust the imperial council of Greensboro. I firmly believe, and I pray to God I’m proven wrong, Greensboro and Guilford County are looking at potentially serious problems. And those problems, should they arise, will impact the average Dick and Jane in the county and the city, not those “elected representatives” who, based on what’s happening with the city manager, will be looked out for.
Again, I hope and pray I’m wrong, but I’m not betting my lunch money on it. And I’m glad we have the castle doctrine.
Carpe diem,
Alan Marshall
Definitely don’t bet your lunch money! Both city and county governments have turned this area into the usual far left cess pool. They advertise for the homeless and of course we get them. The wealthy not running again congresswoman brings all the illegals here to Hobbs Road. Taxes are increased for a million dollar a year councilwoman’s pet project showing no results. Taxes are raised over the moon for more EDI hires in both city and county. Weekly murder rates are the norm. School bonds are passed yet kids still can’t cut it in reading and math. Yeah, keep on voting the same old way. The toilet gurgling is getting louder.
The government contract for this issue includes the word “families”. No interpretation of the word, nor any boundaries, it simply says “and families”.
Alan, you nailed it! The majority of us believe the same thing you do. And when they do kick out those older kids, and they will, what is going to happen to them? More crime because they’re going to start breaking in or robbing people in order to survive? That’s what’s happened in other states. And yes, eventually they will put families in there instead of just kids. I think that it’s unfair that the people of Guilford County don’t get a say in any of this. Our leadership does not give a rats you know what about what the people want. They are going to do what they want to do and it’s all going to fall apart like it always does. We are the people. We are the voters. But we get no say so and what happens in our county. There has to be a way to stop this from happening or we are going to turn into New York. We are going to turn into California. Unfortunately, it seems like that’s exactly what our leadership wants out of us. They want us to turn into one of the big major cities. But the people don’t move here for that. We come here for a quiet and peaceful way of life.
Couldn’t have said it better……..but, back up a few steps………why did our county/city government even allow this? Don’t give me the “compassion” story – it is worn out and its welcome is tired.
Sounds like Alan has to create a conspiracy about ‘older children’ to avoid having to admit that he is afraid of children.
The facility will house unaccompanied children. I suppose Alan wants to toss them back over the border so they can become fodder for human traffickers. All because they are ‘illegal’. Truth is they are assigned asylum status until a family member can be located in their country of origin or the US where they can safely be handed over. Therefore, they are legal based on current US Law.
Again, conservatives had the chance to pass improvements in how migrant families and children are processed at the border. Trump, however, would rather the problem continue so he can use it for fear mongering towards those too ignorant understand that he only cares about himself and not our great country.
It was originally stated that these kids would be between the ages of 13-18, and would be released at the age of 18 (with no information on what that meant or if they would have any government agency support helping them adjust to the community), and that the main reason that Greensboro City and the County were interested was for the funding from the federal government. To understand this you have to go back to small, buried articles from about 3 years ago just after Biden was elected. I didn’t keep them all because I’m not an investigative journalist, but I do have a pretty good memory of it all as I was concerned about how these young people would function after being sheltered for up to 5 years in a closed setting, then being dumped to care for themselves given that foster kids don’t do so well.
Thanks for the additional info Deborah. You also know that these situations are being used by the cartels and gangs as recruiting opportunities.
But hey, the Imperial Council of Greensboro has a secret desire to show they can be as like as those bigger cities like NYC or Chicago.
The goal is to find family or close family friends to release them back to in their original country of origin or here in the US. Note these are children. If they can’t be placed somewhere safe until family can be identified, where do they go?
I don’t know. Back home maybe?
When America has successfully housed every American homeless person, when every American has a full belly and all the benefits being offered to illegals instead of them, then maybe we can start talking about helping our “New Comer” friends. It’s sanctimonious of you Chris to preach to us about helping illegals when you overlook your down and out fellow Americans, especially those who have served their country and are now doing without because their own government is overlooking them in favor of illegals who might one day be used to garner a few extra votes for the Dems.
Quick example: Center City park is full of U.S. homeless. Should we not house them in the AHA facility instead of a bunch of illegals? No. They will sleep in the dirt and go hungry. So noble of you to stand up for the kids though.
****
Well said, Timmy.
By the way, that’s Chrissy’s M.O. – looking down on everyone else. It helps him assuage his own insecurities. He’s a supercilious moral snob.
That is the idea but finding home takes time before they can be sent home.
Typical of a conservative to view things as a zero-sum game. I am very supportive of homeless programs (unlike many conservative posters here who think helping the homeless just attracts more homeless). In this case it comes down to funding. Feds came up with the money. The local community doesn’t have the funds to support this facility as a homeless shelter. Too bad. It would have made a great solution.
I assume your idea is to toss the kids alone back over the border? Or are you not aware of the time and effort it takes to find these kids family and / family contacts to rehouse them safely?
It is a zero sum game, dumb dumb. There is a finite pool of money and every dollar spent on illegals is a dollar NOT spent on citizens. I don’t care if it’s a federal program. If anyone should be focused on US Citizens over illegals, it’s the federal government. Every US dollar spent on helping the less fortunate should be spent on citizens, not illegals.
Programs that “help” homeless people do attract more homeless people. Just ask them why they came to Greensboro and they will tell you. We have thoe most hand outs. That’s a fact. If programs really helped homelessness, you would not see the same dudes on the corner every year. The trouble with programs like Partners Ending Homelessness is that if they were successful, the nonprofit would eventually go away. Therefore they cannot afford to be successful.
Lastly, yes. The kids made it all the way here on their own. They can make it back or the US can pay for it, which would still be cheaper than keeping them here. It is not our responsibility to house, rehouse, or relocate them, especially when plenty of citizens need those same services but aren’t getting them. We did not ask them to come here. Help our citizens first, actually help them.. Then help the world if there is money to spare.
Immigration is a federal issue and funded by federal taxes. Homelessness is a local issue and funded by local taxes. Both issues need to be addressed so I don’t agree it is a zero-sum exercise. If everything were treaded as zero sum, we would never solve any problems as most problems are ongoing issues such as drug addiction, poverty, immigration, homelessness, affordable housing, civil rights, etc.. etc.. etc.. etc…
Too bad the republicans didn’t support the one Bill that would have made a dramatic improvement in the border so they could continue to use it to fear monger the voter base.
We aren’t talking about “immigration” Chris. We are talking about providing money to pay people to be housed, fed, given phones, medicine, etc etc. The only thing this has to do with immigration is that those things are being given to illegals instead of US citizens who need them. Yes, the feds are doing that, but should they be? No. Those dollars, FINITE dollars, that are spent on food, housing, medicine, etc should be spent on needy Americans, not needy illegals.
It IS a zero sum game in this regard and no amount of word parsing will change that. If the feds have 10 million dollars in food and housing aid and illegals get 5 million of that, then that’s half of the available money NOT being spent to help Americans in need.
Not too hard to see now is it?
Tim, we will have to agree to disagree. I prefer a government that focuses on addressing all major issues facing our society and not just singular issues. But you be you.
It would be great to solve the world’s problems. Too bad money is finite as are space and resources.
Chris, All illegals should be “tossed “ back over the border as you say. Not crossing legally is a slap in the face to all of those who came to America legally. Do it right or stay where you’re from.
I agree when it comes to adults and families. I strongly disagree when it comes to unaccompanied children. But then again, republicans could have passed a Bill that would have made it easier to toss em back, but Trump needs the hate to feed his MAGA hat crowd.
How about we turn them away at the border?
Of course they’re illegal immigrants!
And these “children” are all 18-40 year old men. Young, hungry, violent, uneducated, unskilled, sexually hungry men.
They will contribute nothing to America – except for dependency, violence, crime, rape, and other debased and debauched behaviors.
They are barbaric, less evolved people.
Sounds like conservatives in GSO are really afraid of kids. Seems the fear mongering works for those that don’t require facts to support their bias against immigrants. Even though actual facts clearly show immigrants are committed 30 to 40 percent less crime than non-immigrants.
We got it Chrissy…you’re really about children,
Yup. What are you really about Alan?
Chris, I’m not against immigrants. However, I am against opening of the border (er, um. . not protecting the border) without the benefits of who are these people, background checks, etc. Want to bet the Dims will find ways for them to vote without being a citizen? My guess is you or I would not be able vote in foreign countries without following their rules.
I agree. Too bad conservatives scuttled the bill that would have tightened controls on the border. You k ow, the conservatives that would rather let a problem hurting America Co ti be so they can try to use it to hold onto power.
It just occurred to me that when Greensboro starts turning out the illegal hordes that are inevitable, the County and smaller towns will start seeing a serious downturn in quality of life, and as much as I hate to say it, Pleasant Garden, due to it’s proximity to Greensboro, will be the first and hardest hit. And of course Her Highness and her consorts won’t give a hoot. I’m also thinking the County will only give more lip service then help as well as seeing an excuse to raise taxes.
I hear voices saying “learn to live with it peons”
You should be a fiction writer. You are great at making stuff up.
What a joke.
Remember Chris, that goes both ways. Sometimes I get the impression you’re not really providing alternative insight versus just trying to chide the people who post comments with whom you disagree.
I support providing higher quality care for unaccompanied children the cross the border versus the camps used to hold adults.
I beleive using islotated incidents to demonize immigrants when detailed studies say US immigrants commit fewer crimes than US citizens is bigoted use of people’s emotional ignorance.
That clear enough for you?
Cite your source.
Nobody believes that.
https://www.factcheck.org/2018/06/is-illegal-immigration-linked-to-more-or-less-crime/
Let me guess. You don’t have a source for your fear mongering statements?
Which statement?
2 + 2 = 4 ?
Not everything requires a “source”, Einstein.
“There are not readily available statistics on all crimes committed by immigrants present in the US illegally” – that admission from your left wing source.
So…. even they quietly admit that their “Fact Checking” is just conjecture.
Try again, buddy – and please, not from a obviously biased Leftist website.
That’s why they used statistical analysis. Don’t hurt yourself trying to keep up.
Chris. . . have you signed up to take in one or more of the kids? I mean, you seem to be in favor of it, so make sure you let us know how it’s going.
Nope. I beleive it far more efficient for public services to handle and am glad to see GSO as safe place for these kids and beleive it a great use of our tax dollars.
For example, the public solution will involve people who speak their language unlike myself who does not speak Spanish.
But good try Joe. Classic hollow question from a conservative. Try again.
You should visit London, Alan. It has become unrecognisable.
What is different? The color of the skin of it’s citizens? The variety of languages? The variety of cultural backgrounds and traditions? Sounds like an interesting place to be.
The front line of the Ukraine-Russia war is an “interesting” place to be too, but that doesn’t mean it’s a place anyone wants to be. You know that mass, uncontrolled immigration and a failure to assimilate to the norms of the country immigrated to do create significant problems. Just looking at consumption of resources, once available to citizens and now being diverted to immigrants, is a massive stressor and source of strife. Don’t pretend this is all hand holding and sing-song time, Chris. No one will take you seriously with that attitude.
I agree that immigration is something that should be controlled / have caps. But if you don’t support immigration, you end up like Japan with stagflation due to lack of population growth. So don’t pretend immigration is all bad. No one will take you seriously with that attitude.
My point with Austin and many who speak out about immigration is that they claim their country doesn’t ‘look the same’. This is code for less white and more diverse. I do enjoy spending time in areas of diversity. I often travel to NY and Philly for work and really enjoy the variety of people I get to meet and work with in those melting pots.
But you be you.
You left out the “illegal” part. We don’t support illegal immigration. Austin is a legal immigrant. And that makes him welcome. See the difference? Probably not since you seem to apply be looking for ways to call people bigots.
Think of America like you would your house. You have a party and invite ten friends over because you can afford to treat that many people. Then 100 people show up. Now you don’t have enough room, drinks, or snacks for anyone. We all understand. Do you? Get your head out of the clouds or you will bankrupt our nation
