The Greensboro City Council is supposed to have a meeting on public safety in the near future, which is appropriate because Greensboro was recently rated as the most dangerous city in North Carolina.
Best Life rates the 100 most populous cities in the country for safety based on five metrics: violent crimes per 100,000 people, pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people, natural disaster risk level, premature deaths and COVID-19 deaths per capita.
Based on those five metrics, Greensboro ranked as the 45th most dangerous city in the country. Raleigh came out the best of the cities in North Carolina ranking 97th. According to the Best Life figures, the violent crime rate for Raleigh per 100,000 people is 255.77 while for Greensboro the rate is 822.35.
Winston-Salem ranked 74th with a violent crime rate of 591.98; Durham ranked 69th with a violent crime rate of 733.35; and Charlotte ranked 60th with a violent crime rate of 788.30.
According to Best Life, along with the violent crime rating of 822.35, Greensboro had a pedestrian death rate per 100,000 people of 1.62; a natural disaster risk level of 10.2; years of life lost of 7,700; COVID deaths per 100,000 people of 39.8; for a Best Life danger index score of 31.2.
By comparison Raleigh had a Best Life danger index score of 3.6.
Greensboro didn’t rank well compared to the other cities in North Carolina but it did well compared to the city of St. Louis, which has almost exactly the same population as Greensboro. St. Louis ranked number one as the most dangerous city in the country.
The violent crimes per 100,000 people for St. Louis is 1,926.97 and the danger index score awarded by Best Life is 100. According to the St. Louis Police Department, so far this year St. Louis has had 233 murders.
Greensboro is setting a new record this year with 54 murders.
If cure violence program works why are we ranked 46 in top most dangerous city in US ?
That’s a terribly inaccurate statement. This only ranked the largest 100 cities. It would be more appropriate to say something like Greensboro is in the 54th percentile of crime – right in the middle of the pack.

The immediate descriptions of a crime problem and discussion of how bad Greensboro is in the comments and article are clear signs that we aren’t thinking about this clearly. Greensboro is about average crime for a US city. It might be “the worst in NC” but it’s on par with the middle of the pack across the US.
Anyone have previous rankings to look at trends? Anyone acknowledge that their methods includes things like weather and COVID, which are not strongly correlated to crime? Anyone know how they actually weight the various scores they used?
While this might be an interesting story, at the end of the day North Carolina looks great with the “worst” city really being about average.
And will you have that same attitude when you become a victim?
When I hear of two or more break-ins in my area, when I hear of people being assaulted in my area, when I hear of vandalism in my area, I don’t think of that as being “about average”.
And it doesn’t help when all a criminal gets is a slap on the wrist and turned loose regardless of how many times he has broken the law before the police can even finish their paperwork.
If my cursory research is accurate, you don’t live in Greensboro. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Pleasant Garden is neither a city, nor on that list. You also ignore all the other aspects of the ranking that have nothing to do with law enforcement.
I don’t expect to become the victim because Greensboro and NC is largely safe. Sure, being the victim of a crime would certainly change some perspectives, but I don’t pretend to be able to see the future.
Well I was born and raised in Greensboro!!! Today a man was found not guilty of murder!!’ He shot my sons father and shot another man 4 times. Jury deliberated about 15 minutes and came back not guilty!!!! Judge even stated that’s why crime rate was the way it was in Greensboro!!!! Same man shot another man 12/22/2017 in high point. His lawyer told judge he was at work when it happen. And his work was going to write a letter because the victim could not be found….. smh I found the victim in less than 2 hours today….. now where is justice????
I am sure it’s just coincidence that cities run by democrats are the ones most endangering to it’s citizens, but the citizens must like it because they keep electing them. Congrats to Greensboro on finally leading in something.
Absolutely correct! People seem to not pay attention to the fact that the vast majority (if not all) of cities where there were riots are run by Democrats. Care to live in Portland Oregon? Not me.
This rhetoric is getting old. There is a lack of evidence to support that claim or a relationship of causality. I’m sure I just talked over your head, but this story line is really getting tiresome.
Look at this chart from 2013 data (https://insightaas.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Violent-Crime-Rate-Democrats-and-Republicans.jpg). It is almost a completely even split of republican voting states vs. democrat voting states in terms of amount of violence. If you look closely, you’ll see there’s 5 red states and 5 blue states in the top 10. There are 9 red states and 9 blue states that have more crime than the national average. There are 15 red states and 17 blue states that are below the national average.
Let’s look at more data. Over the last 25 years roughly 60% of people each year believe that crime was worse than the previous year. In reality? Over those same 25 years, violent crime has dropped nearly 75%.
63 out of the largest 100 cities have Democrats as mayors. All of the top 20 districts for economic productivity (contribution to GDP) have Democrats as representatives. Does that mean that Republicans can’t run financially successful cities? No. It just means that there are a lot more Democrats (especially in populated areas) than you think there are. And it means that large cities tend to have a different set of challenges than small cities.

Well said sir. I refuse to be a member of either party but the Republicans are close to making a Democrat out of me. Since the inception of FOX NEWS AKA FOX ENTERTAINMENT NOT REAL NEWS, the GOP has sold them selves out over and over again. I do not recognize the GOP I joined in 1994.
This is the Ferguson Effect, the NY Times/ Chief Wayne Scott trashing of GPD about traffic stops, and a general lack of support for GPD by City Council all coming home to roost. Violent crime gets pushed down by a variety of factors, but one of the most significant ones is the fear of getting apprehended. With all of GPD sitting around with their hands in their pockets, criminals feel like they can get a way with murder, literally. Focused, aggressive police work that targets violent offenders is what works to cure violence, not the Cure Violence Program, not bond reform, not diversion programs. Think of what a police force could do if all of the money diverted to waste of time, overspecialized groups could be funneled back into the police force. Funding combined with unabashed support by the local government and the community would solve your violent crime problem in a matter of months.

That’s why I carry a gun. I don’t want to ever hurt anyone but best to have one one than not if you are put in a bad position. I have a felon conviction over 20 years ago but I am willing to take the risk to protect my family and myself.
I agree that the police cannot do their jobs their hands are tied. That’s why you had what we had last week . I respect the police and support them I also feel sorry for them they deal with the worst and cannot do their job the way they need to. Time to let them start cracking heads , looks like a duck walks like a duck talks like a duck must be a duck . That is just the way it is. Let them crack heads and clean Greensboro up . Greensboro is the only major city in NC without police helicopter to patrol the streets. Eyes in the sky means less crime, i don’t want to hear how exspensive it is to run a Avaition unit cause smaller cities like Whiteville,Wilmington,Greeneville have Avaition units so why can’t Greensboro?
