Sue Payne Morgan, 101, of the River Landing Retirement Community in Colfax, NC, and formerly a longtime resident of Sunbury, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2019.

Mrs. Morgan was born in Appomattox, VA on August 27, 1917, and was the daughter of the late John Absalom Payne, Jr. and Mary Ann Clark Payne. For over forty years she worked as a nursing assistant for her brother, Dr. John A. Payne in his Sunbury medical practice. She was a longtime member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church in Sunbury. After moving to the Greensboro area in 2004 to be near her daughters, she had attended Jamestown United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Brooks Morgan, Jr., and by her eight siblings.

Surviving are her daughters, Susan Morgan Smith of Jamestown, and Brooks Morgan Westerhoff and husband, David Owen Westerhoff, of Greensboro; three grandchildren, R. Blaine Smith, Jr. and his wife, Holly Grubb Smith, of High Point, Jennifer Brooks Smith Layne and her husband, Jonathan Wade Layne, of Cary, and Morgan Mary Westerhoff of Boone; and great-grandchildren Trey Blaine Smith, Evelyn Gray Smith, Scarlett Rose Smith, and Julianne Brooks Layne. She also leaves behind a sister-in-law, Mrs. Brownie Morgan Herbin of Burlington; a brother-in-law, Dr. Leon R. Kneebone of State College, PA; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews.

A graveside funeral will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery in Sunbury. Friends may visit with the family at the home of Jonathan and Mary Chester Wasko, 163 Hwy. 32 North, Sunbury, immediately following the service. A Celebration of her life will be held on April 13 at Jamestown United Methodist Church in Jamestown.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the compassionate employees and medical staff of River Landing who helped Mrs. Morgan continue to enjoy her long and fulfilling life during her residency there in these recent years.
