The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is inviting area motorcycle riders to hit the road in September for a good cause – and to make sure the victims and heroes of Sept. 11 aren’t forgotten.
Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers and the Sheriff’s Office will hold the annual GCSO 9/11 Ride to Remember on Saturday, Sept. 12. The commemorative motorcycle ride will honor those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks as well as the men and women who lost their lives in the wars that followed.
The event will also recognize first responders, members of the military, veterans and civilians who showed extraordinary courage and sacrifice.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office at 401 W. Sycamore St. in downtown Greensboro. Kickstands go up at 10:30 a.m., when riders will leave under escort by the Sheriff’s Office Motorcycle Unit.
The ride will end at Mac’s Speed Shop at 1218 Battleground Ave. in Greensboro.
Registration is $20 for riders and $10 for passengers.
Door prizes will be raffled at the finish.
Proceeds will benefit local veterans and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the nonprofit established in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Tunnel to Towers was created in honor of New York City firefighter Stephen Siller, who was killed responding to the World Trade Center attacks. The organization provides mortgage-free homes to families of fallen first responders and Gold Star families, builds specially adapted homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders and supports programs addressing veteran homelessness.
Those participating don’t have to have known anyone who died on Sept. 11 to have a reason to ride. But a quarter of a century later, the idea behind the event is simple– remember those who were lost and those who answered the call.
My compliments to Danny Rogers and the sheriff’s department for putting a focus on 9-11. Especially at a time when many on a national level would choose to forget.

Pearl Harbor day is gone, but not forgotten. My father joined the USMC in December 1941. He came back in one piece, but he died young, and unhappy. He paid his own price. Seeing our Republic today, I doubt if he would have volunteered. I wouldn’t.
I think people who “hate” out Country, should be forced out.

I’ll be participating in this ride. I just hope they are truly giving that money to who they say and Danny ain’t pocketing it. It’s a great benefit and it’s a wonderful way for bikers to show support in honor of 9/11.
