The Guilford County Sheriff’s Department’s days aren’t consumed entirely with tracking down bad guys.
Sometimes, as is the case right now, the department is looking for some good guys as well as some other good-hearted county residents.
This week, the Sheriff’s Department announced the kickoff of its annual “Fill the Bus” campaign which is now taking place in the parking lot of the department’s administrative headquarters at 400 W. Washington St. in downtown Greensboro.
As the name of the toy drive implies, the sheriff, his deputies and other department staff are committed to packing a bus in the lot with toys for kids in need who otherwise might not get a Christmas present. Each year, the department encourages Guilford County residents to help “Fill The Bus.”
Those who want to donate can bring their gifts to the department’s administrative headquarters from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The department will be taking the gifts until Tuesday, Dec. 14.
That’s not the only seasonal event the Sheriff’s Department is putting on this Christmas. The department will also hold its Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Last year, due to COVID-19, the event was held, but it wasn’t open to the public. This year it will be open to anyone who wishes to attend.
The 2021 ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
Every year at the ceremony, the department honors the lives lost in Guilford County from traffic accidents, domestic violence and addiction.
At the tree lighting, the department remembers those who passed away by illuminating lights that will then continue shining through the holidays.
