If you enjoy tasty seafood and you want to support a good cause – well, you can indulge both of those proclivities this weekend when former Guilford County Commissioner Justin Conrad and a lot of others put on an oyster roast to help in the fight against cancer.

On Saturday, April 22, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Bender’s Tavern, along with Ken and Lee’s Crew, will host Roastin’ for Research – an oyster roast fundraiser with live music.

Bender’s Tavern is at 4517 W. Market St. in Greensboro. Tickets are $50 per attendee and $15 for children 12 and under.

The crew promises “amazing seafood and live music.”

The event was originally scheduled a little earlier in the day but a morning rain threat led to a new time on Saturday.

“We moved the time due to the weather,” Conrad said this week.  “It’s now 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.”

According to Conrad, the HonkyTonk Outlaws will play acoustic music inside from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Camel City Yacht Club will play outside from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There will also be a raffle and a silent auction at the April 22 charity event.

Raffle prizes will be drawn throughout the day, and the silent auction will conclude at 8 p.m.

All proceeds will be donated to fund pediatric cancer research through Reelin’ for Research – a fishing tournament out of Morehead City that benefits UNC Children’s Hospital.

Roastin’ for Research honors Ken and Lee Conrad, longtime Greensboro residents who were well known for a variety of charitable causes in the Greensboro community.  Ken and Lee passed away from cancer but their “Crew” – family and friends – were determined to continue their legacy in search of a cure for the disease.

Over the years, Ken and Lee’s Crew has raised more than $200,000 for cancer research including over $60,000 in last year’s campaign. This year – through a partnership with the Tucker Family Foundation – Ken and Lee’s Crew are reporting that the group is well on the way of surpassing last year’s total.
