The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t take kindly to people who are not law enforcement officers but pretend to be – and they demonstrated that fact this week by arresting a scammer who was posing as an officer and locking him up in jail.
The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office reported that, on Thursday, May 1, deputies arrested 21-year-old Kishan Kumar Singh – an international student from India – after he allegedly attempted to scam an elderly Stokesdale woman by pretending to be a law enforcement officer.
On May 1, Sheriff’s Office deputies in the District 1 area of the county were contacted by the 78-year-old woman who reported that she had been receiving phone calls earlier in the week from people claiming to be deputies with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office as well as federal agents.
The callers told the lady that her name had been linked to criminal activity in another part of the country and that her bank accounts had been compromised.
According to the report from the Sheriff’s Office, “They pressured her into withdrawing a large amount of money from her accounts and told her that it would be provided to the ‘federal agents’ for safekeeping during their investigation and then refunded to her later. Deputies learned that the scammers impersonating federal agents scheduled to send someone to the victim’s residence to pick up the money that afternoon. Singh was arrested by deputies after he arrived at the victim’s home and took a package.”
Singh has reportedly been living in and around Cincinnati, Ohio on a student visa since 2024.
Now, he’s living in the Guilford County Detention Center in Greensboro under a $1 million secured bond.
The alleged scammer faces the following charges:
- Felony Attempting to Obtain Property by False Pretenses
- Felony Exploitation of a Disabled or Elder Adult
The Sheriff’s Office notes that this is an ongoing investigation and states that there’s no further information to share.
The Office issued the following warning: If you get a suspicious call or think you might be the target of a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency immediately. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office will never call you asking for money.
When in doubt, give the Sheriff’s Office a call at 336-641-3694.

Has anybody called ICE yet ?
Hope he’s Singh-ing the Blues soon as he’s flown back to India on a one-way ticket courtesy of ICE. No delays, speedy trial, then send him home.
hold him for ransom then expel ? reduce the federal deficit !
DEPORT!!
Deport!’
How about this one chris, legally here on a visa and still can’t resist being a criminal.
Still fewer immigrants causing crime than natural born citizens. Thanks for the opportunity to share that FACT, yet again.
Fact is less immigrants than American citizens
Fact is immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than natural born citizens.
No matter what you say he will counter it some manipulated numbers.
As a multi-degree holder you’d think he was capable of doing simple math.
Well ain’t that a hoot! I keep getting these calls every other day now from people pretending to be a Guilford County sheriff saying that I owe them money for a fine for not showing up for federal jury duty. And when you call the number back it goes to the sheriff’s department. Or what is supposed to be the sheriff’s department rather. One of these men has been making threats to me because I told him I knew it was a scam. He knew my address, my parents address and my son’s address. I called the sheriff to report it and they told me there was nothing they could do about it! I said, I thought impersonating a deputy was a crime. They said no it was not unless I actually gave him money! So this article doesn’t make any sense according to what the sheriff has told me the past four times. I told them I felt like I was being threatened because the man told me he was going to come after me. They said there was nothing they could do about it unless he showed up. So according to them, it is not a crime to impersonate a sheriff’s deputy. And apparently, it’s not a crime to make physical threats. I think they should lock the guy up, but I have no say in the matter. They just brushed me completely off. I have his phone number. I have his name. I have two recordings from him saying he’s a deputy. But they won’t do anything about it!
Maybe you’re the wrong race. Or you voted for the wrong Sheriff
That makes no sense. Sheriff Rogers did a Facebook video saying this is illegal, but then a victim is told nothing can be done, but they made an arrest and publicized it. They need to get on the same page. Hopefully Guilford County will see the light and vote Republican for William “Billy” Queen for Sheriff in the next election. I have read his books, researched him on Wikipedia, met him at an event and he is what Guilford County needs to straighten things out. I am tired of the past 7 years of the Sheriffs car being stolen, releasing inmates improperly then calling it “escapes” lol, and how many inmate deaths have occurred? It’s time for a change!!!
