When it comes to setting early voting sites in North Carolina, however, four out of five isn’t quite good enough.
That’s why the North Carolina State Board of Elections will have the final say on Guilford County’s early voting plan for the Tuesday, Nov. 3 general election.
The Guilford County Board of Elections voted 4-1 in July for a plan with 17 early voting sites; however, state law requires a unanimous vote from a county elections board to approve an early voting plan locally.
Democratic board member Carolyn Bunker cast the lone vote against the majority plan.
The disagreement centers on four potential early voting locations and, in particular, whether Guilford County should operate early voting sites on the campuses of NC A&T State University and UNC Greensboro.
The four-member majority supported a plan based largely on the 15-site plan Guilford County used for the 2022 midterm election – with Stokesdale Town Hall and Union Square Campus added to bring the number of sites to 17.
Union Square is on East Gate City Boulevard in Greensboro and is a collaborative educational facility involving NC A&T, UNCG, Guilford Technical Community College and Cone Health.
Bunker submitted an alternate plan that would also have 17 sites but would leave out Stokesdale Town Hall and Union Square and instead include early voting sites on the UNCG and NC A&T campuses.
One argument for putting sites on college campuses is that students might have more trouble than others getting to alternative early voting sites. Some county residents, however, don’t like the fact that people can come to the county for a few years and then make consequential votes that they don’t have to live with when they move on. Some Republicans don’t want county boards to bend over backward to help college students votes because they believe that, overall, the college population tends to be more liberal than conservative.
The county’s official website identifies the 17-site proposal supported by four members as a “non-unanimous Majority Plan” and makes clear that it hasn’t been finally approved.
Under North Carolina law, county boards of elections may establish their early voting plans by unanimous vote. When the members can’t agree unanimously, the dispute goes to the State Board of Elections.
That means an 80 percent majority on the Guilford board wasn’t enough.
And the choice facing the State Board isn’t necessarily limited to simply picking the four-member majority plan or Bunker’s alternative.
Collicutt told the Rhino Times that, although the State Board usually chooses one of the plans submitted by county board members, it has considerably more freedom than that.
“They typically do choose one or the other, but they don’t have to,” Collicutt said. “They could craft something, a hybrid. They could go a different direction. They could tweak here and tweak there.”
He added, “It’s not an A or B option. It’s typically an A or B option – but they could come up with an option C.”
The North Carolina State Board of Elections has scheduled the non-unanimous county early voting plans for consideration Thursday, Aug. 20.
The State Board’s meeting notice places Guilford in the group of counties where local election board members disagree over early voting locations or over locations as well as dates or times.
According to Collicutt, whatever the State Board decides will establish the final early voting plan Guilford County uses for the November election.

A point I have made over and over again. The National Socialist Democrat Party have ripped off the remainder of their mask and are now openly laughing in the face of tax paying residents and giving us the finger. They are embolden by the Socialist Party outing itself and are wanting to reap the rewards of their long term plan to fundamentally change and eventually overthrow our Representative Republic and replace it with a Socialist society.
Add to this the ridiculous act of creating these ‘voting seasons’ where you have polls open for weeks at a time. This allows for the stronger possibility of voter fraud and without a requirement for a form of valid ID, real picture ID, not a utility bill. If that’s the standard, get rid of the TSA, get rid of drivers license, just let anyone who wonders into a polling place vote. In fact just make voting a year round option, go where you want to vote when you want. You’re not a native born or even an actual citizen of the United States? No problem, you can run for office.
How have we gotten to this point? Because the American people can’t be bothered with something as minor as deciding deciding who is going to represent them and make laws . They’re more concerned with who is on Dancing with the Stars or America’s Got Talent. They’re more then willing to whine and bitch about how Professional Politicians, people who feed at the government trough for almost their entire lives, people who have never held a REAL job, people who are being paid ridiculous amounts of money by We The People, money we are forced, under the threat of law and imprisonment, to give over so they can use it to buy votes and hire close friends to do what they are supposed to be doing, that being The People’s Work.
We The People have let this happen through apathy. That and letting these ‘elected officials’ make the rules THEY want, THEY benefit from, THEY profit from. This along with the dismantling of what was a great education system that has gotten away from EDUCATING children and is instead INDOCTRINATING them. A teacher that takes time from educating children…LEADS the children in a protest THEY want to support need to be fired and never be allowed to teach again.
The American people have allowed our elected representatives to become our elected overlords through large scale apathy. You asked for it, you got it…SOCIALISM.

North Carolina already requires photo ID to vote in person. Noncitizens cannot legally vote, and registering while falsely claiming citizenship is a felony. Noncitizens also don’t simply get to run for elected office because someone opened an early-voting location. Those are laws, not suggestions.
And early voting isn’t some mysterious “voting season” where people can wander into any polling place whenever they feel like it. North Carolina establishes specific dates, locations and procedures for early voting.
So before declaring that the Republic is being overthrown by “Socialists,” perhaps provide some evidence that any of these things are actually happening. Oh right…..Conservatives don’t believe in the value of evidence.

They come to college here, I’m sure they have an out of state driver’s license or ID. Let them vote in the state that is was issued in. Mail in ballots are sooo easy, even a college moron could do it

Oh, you watch FoxNews and believe the propaganda about forced Sharia law within a new development which has been debunked by the developers building the 400 acre center. The U.S. Department of Justice investigated the project and closed the case without finding civil rights violations or charges.
