On Wednesday, Aug. 7, the Greensboro Day School announced the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Helen Monroe Preschool – the Day School’s newest building.

The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  That will be followed by an open house that will run until 12:30 p.m.

In May, the Greensboro Day School broke ground on the 19,300-square-foot preschool facility. The preschool, for students ages two to four, has seen more than a150 percent growth enrollment since 2019, and this new facility will allow the school to meet the growing demand

The new facility, which the Day School calls “state-of-the-art” includes indoor classroom space, an outdoor breezeway, a “multisensory” playground, and other learning spaces that are meant to support the students growth and curiosity.

Every classroom in the new building opens up to the outdoors.

According to Head of School Tracie Catlett, the building is specifically designed to foster the social, emotional, and intellectual growth of preschool-age children.

“Our preschool teachers are experts in the area of early childhood education,” Catlett said. “Their input and experience has been an essential part of the design process. The design includes indoor and outdoor academic learning and play spaces that embrace what’s best for kids. This state-of-the-art preschool center will support a program informed by neuro and cognitive sciences to maximize children’s learning and development during the critical preschool years.”

Little Architects of Charlotte designed the building, while Samet Corporation served as the general contractor for the project.

The Helen Monroe Preschool is part of the Day School’s $25 million “Be Bold Comprehensive Campaign” in support of the new preschool, a new Center for Student Life, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, a new maintenance facility, and new restroom facilities at the tennis center.

Additional money is being used for the school’s endowment fund to maintain the new facilities.

The Greensboro Day School: Greensboro is a private, coeducational school that currently educates nearly 1,000 students from age 2 to grade 12.  The Day School, which sits on a  70-acre campus in Greensboro, was founded in 1970.
