The Guilford County Board of Commissioners likes to hold a meeting in downtown High Point once every blue moon or so, but on Thursday, April 21, the board will make a full day of work out of its excursion into the county’s second largest city.

On Tuesday, April 19, the board announced that, in addition to the already planned county commissioners meeting in High Point, the board will also add a dense afternoon work session.

April, May and June are always extremely busy months for the commissioners who, by law, have to decide on a county budget each year by the last day of June. According to the agenda for the just-added afternoon work session on Thursday, budget issues and the budget process will be part of that discussion.

The April 21 work session will take place at 3 p.m. in the City Council Chambers on the third floor of the High Point Municipal Building at 211 Hamilton Street.

The official stated purpose of the work session is to “discuss American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding ideas; receive an update on the Guilford County budget process to date; receive an update on the Guilford County Broadband Study and consider NC GREAT Grant application support requests from AT&T and BrightSpeed; consider and adopt the Board’s Fiscal Year 2022-23 Legislative Goals; and conduct any other necessary business.”

That’s quite a lot of business for a two-and-a-half-hour work session.

The board will go directly from that session into its regular meeting, which will start at 5:30 p.m. and address an entirely different set of issues.

The meeting room will be open for anyone who wants to come.

There will also be a virtual viewing option using Zoom. People can watch their county government in action by visiting https://www.zoomgov.com/j/1617158288 on a smartphone, tablet or computer and then following the instructions.

The two meetings Thursday will also be livestreamed on Guilford County’s Facebook page – and there will also be an option to listen by telephone. Those with questions can contact Guilford County Deputy Clerk Ariane Webb at awebb@guilfordcountync.gov.

Copies of the work session agenda will be available for review prior to the meeting at https://guilford.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx.
