For years, groups in Guilford County and Forsyth County worked to get a memorial for veterans at Triad Park, and this year that memorial – the Carolina Field of Honor – will be the site of a very special Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11.

The ceremony, which will start at 11 a.m., will feature color guards, special music, the laying of the wreath and taps as well as other commemorative activities meant to honor all those who have served our country, past and present. Comments will be made by several distinguished Veterans.

There will also be a “special treat,” according to event organizers. The keynote speaker will be Mrs. Dinny Sisley, the wife of Brigadier General Fred Sisley, USMA (ret).

“All of us who have ever worn a uniform know that the military is a total family commitment,” stated Lieutenant Colonel, USMC (ret) Scott Matthews in a press release.

Matthews is the chairman of the War Memorial Foundation Board of Directors.

“It’s not just the Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airman or Coast Guardsman that serves, and we are honored to have Mrs. Sisley share with us her unique story,” Matthews stated.

Aside from memorials in Washington D.C., the Carolina Field of Honor is the largest memorial to honor Veterans on the East Coast.

The Field of Honor is in Triad Park near Kernersville. The memorial opened in 2014 and more than 3,000 veterans are already enshrined at the monument, which was constructed by the War Memorial Board who is planning the ceremony.

Former Guilford County Commissioner Bruce Davis, a veteran, was one of many local leaders who pushed hard for years to get the community to establish the memorial.

The general public is invited to this event honoring veterans.

In the past, there have been some traffic problems but organizers said that this year those have been worked out and they add that getting in and out of the park should be much easier this Veterans Day.

The ceremony and parking are free and lawn chairs are encouraged. For directions and more information, please visit the website at www.carolinafieldofhonor.org. The service will take place rain or shine.
