Not all of the new activity around bustling Piedmont Triad International Airport involves big aeronautic companies announcing they are coming to the airport’s megasite. PTI has also been offering more choices for flights, and the airport is getting a very welcome addition this week.

On Friday, June 6, Breeze Airways will begin service at PTI, offering new nonstop flights to Hartford, Connecticut (BDL) and Orlando, Florida (MCO).

The very low-cost airline is now flying twice a week to both destinations – on Mondays and Fridays—as part of its continued expansion into mid-sized US markets.

The inaugural celebration will take place at PTI’s Gate 27 and feature a ceremonial sendoff for the first outbound flight.

The new service is part of Breeze’s ongoing effort to bring low-cost, nonstop travel to underserved routes across the US.

PTI is a very convenient airport to use, with easy parking and short lines, however, often ticket prices are higher at PTI than both Charlotte Douglas International and Raleigh-Durham International airports, each about an hour and 15 minutes from Greensboro.– both just about an hour and 15 minutes away from Greensboro.  So, airport officials at PTI spend a lot of time seeking out low-cost carriers as well as other new carriers willing to service PTI.

In February, when the Breeze announcement was made, Executive Director of Piedmont Triad Airport Authority Kevin Baker said he was delighted about the addition of a new very low-cost provider.

“We are pleased to welcome Breeze as a new airline at PTI and to have nonstop service to Hartford and Orlando, which adds to the other 14 nonstop destinations offered by carriers at PTI,” Baker said in the wake of the announcement.

Airport Authority members are now encouraging those served by the airport to try to book some Breeze flights to help it succeed in this area.

Breeze, which was launched in 2021 by airline entrepreneur David Neeleman, is operating the new PTI routes with Airbus A220 aircraft. The planes feature both standard and premium seating and offer three service packages: Nice, Nicer, and Nicest.

Breeze emphasizes customer flexibility with its policy of no change or cancellation fees up to 15 minutes before departure. The airline also offers a la carte pricing that allows passengers to customize their travel experience.

The addition of Breeze gives PTI service from seven commercial airlines and is part of the airport’s broader strategy to rebuild and expand flight offerings following disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. PTI has been trying to get back up to pre-COVID passenger levels.

Breeze has been named a top 5 “Best Domestic Airline” by Travel + Leisure for three consecutive years and was named “Best Seat Comfort in North America” by Airline Passenger Experience.

In 2024, Breeze was the first US domestic airline to be certified by Autism Double Checked, and it’s the official airline of Make-a-Wish Utah.
