An attempted robbery of an armored vehicle carrying valuables that leaves a man dead sounds more like something that would happen in a movie than something that would occur in the small town of Whitsett, North Carolina; however, that is what happened as some people of the small town looked on.

But it gets more bizarre: According to the Greensboro News and Record, the alleged robber who was shot and killed was awaiting trial for another similar charge – planning a previous armed vehicle robbery.

The Sheriff’s Office has identified the deceased suspect as 26-year-old Devonte Eugene Scott of Albemarle, North Carolina.

There’s been a lot of discussion nationally in recent years as to whether the courts are letting accused criminals out of jail too easily. At the time of the alleged robbery attempt in Whitsett, Scott was free on a $40,000 bond after being charged with felony conspiracy to rob an armored truck in another case.

The Sheriff’s Office hasn’t identified the shooter, but it seems very likely it was a guard for the armored vehicle.

According to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at about 9:15 a.m. deputies responded to a call regarding an attempted robbery of a Brinks armored truck in the Stoney Creek Village parking lot at 6307 Burlington Road in Whitsett.

While responding to the call, deputies received updated information that a shooting had occurred.

When they arrived, the officers found the alleged attempted robber dead from a gunshot wound.

This is the second time this month that officers responding to a call learned in route that there had been a shooting.  Last weekend, they responded to a “loud party” call in the middle of the night and learned on the way, on that call too, that someone had been shot and arrived – and they found a deceased man upon arrival there as well.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, “This appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no immediate threat to the community.”

Investigators are currently trying to unpack the nature or what transpired and the Sheriff’s Office isn’t saying much about the ongoing inquiry.

Anyone with information related to the incident is being encouraged to contact Detective J. Wright at 336-641-5971 or call Guilford County Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
