Glad Contreras Is Leaving
Dear Editor,
I am glad School Superintendent Sharon Contreras is leaving. Anyone who can make it to President Biden’s short list for secretary of education should not be leading the Guilford County school system. Plus, she has managed to saddle the county with a billion dollar bond vote in November. Now she goes on her merry way!
The geniuses that run our school system need to learn how to make capital outlays staying within their budget, instead of letting everything fall into a state of disrepair. Then expecting the taxpayers to bail them out plus paying their generous salaries and benefits.

But… but.. it’s “for the children”.
Interesting that Contreras has stayed just long enough to qualify for full retirement benefits from the county and state. I guess she will go around and collect a few more from other systems and organization.
Wilson,
You should learn how the schools are funded before saying things so wrong. Also why do you have to be so mean about it. Just make you point without insulting others. It shows poorly on you not them.
Exactly! Thanks for this. There’s always some naysayer that can’t hold a candle to the person they’re berating!!
Kinda the modern conservatives jam to generate hate and loathing in all that they say. Just look at their leader’s use of childish insults and name calling for anyone that doesn’t give 100% loyalty to him over country.
The “Education Lottery” was supposed to go only for education. How come they always, always, continue to ask for more, more, more, despite the millions generated?
It has been this way since the state forced the merger of the three school systems in Guilford County. I live in High Point, attended High Point City Schools from the 60’s -74. We had people who were fiscally sound, able to manage the schools, their needs and had a positive relation with the parents and the business people of our city. There has been discussions over here on the southwest side of Guilford County to get out of the Guilford County fiasco. There are still three school systems in Davidson County–Thomasville City, Lexington City and Davidson County. Maybe the problem is that when a system gets to a certain size, the heavy administrative system simply cannot manage effectively. Or is it we just cannot find a leader with business acumen who also does not have an agenda based on lowering standards to bring the top achievers down to the level of the non-achievers? Seems simple enough, but first it will be necessary to replace the democrats on the school board. Otherwise, the search and hiring of a new superintendent will be a repeat of the last fiasco.
Uh, that would be our County Commissioners as well. With no plans put forth for prior care and renovation of the schools within Guilford County we find ourselves with deteriorating schools and no money for such.
The Federal Government has provided Guilford County with millions of dollars in COVID FUNDS, earmarked for schools.
Like the movie said “show me the money “!
The departure of Contreras will not fix anything, because she is not the problem. The school board hired her to mismanage the schools, and that is what she has done. The same school board that liked her incompetence in education will hire someone else just as incompetent. As long as we keep electing the same people to the school board, we will continue to get the same failed policies and dismal results.
I believe she saw the handwriting on the wall and decided to leave before getting released.

Take Back Our Schools from who or what? The teachers?
My “go to” remark is “What would you do if you were in that position? You will learn quickly the compounded, upon compounded weight that government requires anyone, along with those in positions to navigate to bring about change. I believe it is moreso when decisions and changes require “a committee” and then votes from them. Hurrah for all those who step up to involve themselves in our community in all roles which support our lives. The views then are sifted and re-sifted to a ‘reality’ slowly but surely. It would be ‘tell tale’ to see comparisons of progress from our past to those across this nation in stepping into the future of our communities.
Tell us about “what you would do”, then learn those confounded compounded weights and patience not to mention the capacity to articulate for those committees to come along with the proposed ‘whatever’. Born an American I am, but not the one who throws a spoiled rotten fit when things aren’t my way. I will join in the group my interests lie for my contribution. Bee wise people, Bee kind, and Bee your best you, please.
