A letter to the editor from Rhino Times reader Tim Souhan
Dear editor,
Dear editor,
Speaking as a long-time resident of the New Irving Park neighborhood, in a home on Willoughby Boulevard. I’m writing to support Nicky Smith’s remarks about the Greensboro City Council and its highly capricious and short-sighted April 17th decision to rezone property.
Aside from district 3 representative, Zack Matheny, six other city council representatives displayed a callous disregard for the neighborhood. The rezoning decision ignored the will of neighborhood residents and the city’s own land use guidelines. Despite a rational and passionate case against the rezoning, presented by neighborhood residents and Zack Matheny, the council ignored resident wishes. With their minds made up well in advance, numerous council members took the opportunity to even talk down to residents. None of the individuals speaking in favor of the rezoning even live in the neighborhood. Apparently, this carries more weight with council…shocking.
In closing, we elect a city council to be objective and fair. The majority of it’s current members are not. Vote them out.
Tim Souhan
As is so often the case, the undercurrents that determined the outcome had nothing to do with the merits of the issue.
New Irving Park is wealthy, white and “privileged” – so the concerns of its residents must be rejected.
The Left is the embodiment of spite, resentment, and reverse racism.
Another “duh” moment. TUVM.
Yeah, I get it Miller – you’re saying I’m stupid and stating the obvious. I don’t know what your problem is with me, old man, but why don’t you enlighten us all and explain what “TUVM” is?
Thank you very much.
You misundertook my comment Senyor.
Wouldn’t that be “T.Y.V.M.”?
Sorry if I misunderstood, but it sure looked like a put down.
I wonder if all this talk of “just accepting progress” would apply to a proposal to re-open the White Street landfill ?
Mr. Souhan,
Here’s how it works…I’m shocked, SHOCKED that the City Council would disregard the wishes of a community…(a “stranger” walks up to the Council dais) Your “winnings” sir/madam.
Apologies to my all time favorite movie.
The Greensboro City Council makes Captain Renault look like a model of propriety.
Austin,
Nice to know another with great taste in excellent movies, lol
“You know, I think this might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship…”
Austin.
I agree but let’s be careful, SOMEONE might start rumors…not that care what he says or does.
(La Marseillaise playing as we walk off into the fog)
Okay PH, but I don’t think anyone suspected Rick & Captain Renault of being poofters.
Vive la France!
You dilute your opinion by mentioning the you live on Willoughby, a place where swell people are proud of where they live. I have heard this statement elsewhere.
Dear Tim,
Thank you for your thoughtful and passionate letter in support of my campaign and defense of our community. Your words captured exactly what so many of us feel — frustration at being ignored by those elected to represent us. It means a great deal to have residents like you stand up and speak out for fairness, transparency, and genuine neighborhood advocacy.
I am committed to being a voice for our community and restoring the trust that has been eroded. With your support, we can work together to bring real change to Greensboro.
Thank you again for your support and belief in a better future.
Sincerely,
Nicky Smith,
Candidate for City Council District 4
