Two homicides were reported in Greensboro on Tuesday, Sept. 21, including a 14-year-old.
At 12:19 a.m., Tuesday Sept. 21, the Greensboro Police Department reported the homicide of Basil Haizeis Wilson, 14-years-old.
Police responded to the report of a shooting at 5:50 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20 at the intersection of East Florida Street and Randolph Avenue and discovered Wilson suffering from a gunshot wound. Wilson was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and the shooting is now being investigated as a homicide.
At 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, Greensboro police responded to the area of Bragg Street and Bennett Street in response to the report of a shooting. Police officers located Brandon Montrial Smith, 28 years old of Greensboro, suffering from a gunshot wound. Smith succumbed to his injuries and the incident is being investigated as homicide.
On Monday, Sept. 20, police also reported that the investigation of Joy Amanda Moorefield, 40, of Greensboro, who was reported missing in July, had resulted in the remains of Moorefield being found buried in Chatham County and the incident was investigated as a homicide.
As a result of the investigation, Jamey Preston Johnson, 45 of Greensboro, has been arrested and charged with first degree murder and concealment of death.
Also on Monday, Sept. 20, police reported that the death of Keyoka Robinson, 33 of Greensboro, was being investigated as homicide.
Police had responded on Sept. 19 to the report of an aggravated assault at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Julian Street and discovered Robinson suffering from a gunshot wound. Robinson was also struck by a vehicle while in the roadway, but police don’t believe that was the cause of death and the driver was not charged.
According to the public safety update released by the Greensboro Police Department through Sept. 12, 2021, there had been 32 homicides reported in Greensboro compared to 41 reported in the same time period in 2020. In 2020 the city set a new record for the number of homicides with 61.
The number of aggravated assaults through Sept. 12 was up slightly over last year with 1,339 this year compared to 1,330 during the same time period in 2020. However, the number of aggravated assaults with a firearm was down from 2020 with 767 this year compared to 857 during the same time period in in 2020.

Getting scary just driving into downtown. What the heck is going on and why is it I hardly ever see any police cars in and around Martin Luther King drive. This gun shot death happened on a Sunday afternoon. Wake up Greensboro we are getting a terrible reputation.
Greensboro is doomed!!!!! 900.00 dollars for NOTHING!!! Statues destroyed and nothing improves!!! Living 100 years in the past with HATE and being unable to accept ourselves and we are. Waiting for some one else to make us human. DEMANDING others to except us instead of us accepting reality!!! Protesting and accomplishing nothing. Getting worst every day and more homicides every day. Schools become gang infested and over run with horror events the make children going to school a dangerous part of their lives. And THIS is life in GREENSBORO today!!!

Greensboro’s Democratic leadership has long wanted to have the city thought of as a “BIG” city.
They’re just trying to get the crime rate in line with Chicago, NY, Detroit and others.

We are known as little Detroit. We look like it too, Greensboro looks very run down.
I to would like a progress report on Ms. Johnson’s project. Apparently no one is being held accountable for anything.
And the citizens of Greensboro have EVERY right to know ALL the details of this error in judgement in given OUR tax money to a Council member without ANY accountability of what OUR money is being spent for!!! Nothing good has come to OUR City with this mistake.
Aggravated assaults are mostly flat year over year and Aggravated assaults with a firearm are down over 10%. Not too bad given the economic stresses our community face from prolonged pandemic. I have never felt threatened or scared in Greensboro.
The BLM riots where a stain on Greensboro for sure but other than that few days which were easy to avoid where have you all felt personally threaten?
Actually Chris, you, like the media, are taking a very base look at the numbers. You are only looking at last year’s numbers, and since it was a record setting year for violent crime in Greensboro, it would not be prudent to use that year alone for comparison. Because it was a record setting year, by default everything that comes after will be a “decrease” in crime unless we have another record setting year. Very disingenuous.
However, If you look at 5 year trends, you get a more accurate view if where we stand. The actual number trends for this year compared to a five year average are: Aggravated Assaults up 26%, Assaults with guns are up 13%, Homicides up 6%, murder with guns up 19%.
Not as safe as you thought, are we? And don’t forget the continued policing shortage on top of that.

I live rural so really was curious where the concern was coming from as I don’t get downtown nearly as often since Covid and never really saw Greensboro as having a crime problem. But again, I live outside the city.

Greensboro does a lot of stuff wrong, but they do have some transparent crime data if anyone wants to look at it.

The violence and homicides of children have nothing to do with economic strain. There is a gang problem (same issue in the Mt. Tabor shooting). The illustrious police department does not want to admit this and also does not want to state how many the department is short. That’s why you rarely see police cars on MLK. They have a staffing crisis and have sat on their hands for months not addressing the problem. They cannot hire their way out of it because of the current state of law enforcement and the public and the GPD reputation within the field. The attrition will continue and the leadership will sit on their hands. Just take the report and move on.
