More than two years after a 5-month-old child died in Brown Summit, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest and filed murder charges in the case.
According to Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers, deputies were first called to a home on Hickory Court on the night of Dec. 8, 2023, for a reported cardiac arrest involving an infant.
When deputies arrived, Guilford County Emergency Services personnel were already on the scene performing life-saving efforts on the child. The infant was taken to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead.
At that time, investigators with the sheriff’s office Major Crimes Investigative Unit began looking into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities say that investigation continued for over two years, with assistance from the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Guilford County District Attorney’s Office.
Though many details remain under wraps, at some point during that process, law enforcement officials determined that the infant’s death wasn’t natural.
Investigators ultimately ruled the case a homicide.
On Friday, March 20, 2026, deputies arrested 37-year-old Travis Jaamal Sistrunk (pictured above) in connection with the case.
Sistrunk has been charged with felony first-degree murder and felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious injury.
He’s currently being held in the Guilford County Detention Center in Greensboro without bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday, March 23 at 2 p.m.
Sheriff’s officials say the investigation is still ongoing and that no additional details are being released at this time.
Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact Detective J. Allen with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office at 336-641-2799 or call Guilford County Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
