A letter to the editor from Rhino reader – Alvis Hare
Incredibly, the City Council is seriously considering reintroducing Red Light Cameras.
We already tried this. These devices conspicuously failed to improve safety, failed to pad the coffers of the City of Greensboro, and failed to gain legitimacy.
To all Greensboro Councilmembers: Don’t make the same mistake twice.

The red light camera systems, with their potential for misuse, also function as surveillance cameras in a police state.
These traffic cameras, often touted as safety measures, are in reality money-making scams for states and have been shown to do little to increase safety while contributing to more accidents.
Nevertheless, they are being inflicted on unsuspecting drivers by revenue-hungry municipalities, despite revelations of corruption.
Do we know if G’boro uses a company to lease cameras? If so, it’s likely the company takes a cut of the ticket fines, raising questions about profit motives.
I’ve read that in some areas of the country, turning right on red can cause the cameras to capture your information. Additionally, some companies reduce the amount of time that traffic lights stay yellow to capture more license plates.
And what about confidentiality if a company monitors these cameras? They will have some of your info as well.
It’s not a good idea, especially from greedy council members who don’t care about citizens. Just follow the money.
.
Correct. The for-profit private companies that operate the cameras routinely shorten the duration of the yellow light, so as to catch more “red light runners”. CHA-CHING !
It doesn’t take people long to catch on, and so drivers slam on the brakes the instant the light turns yellow, which DOUBLES or TRIPLES the number of rear end collisions at the intersection.
These things are a shake down, have nothing to do with safety, and are all about picking the pockets of innocent people (and causing crashes).
Just don’t pay the ticket. It’s no points on your license and they really can’t enforce a civil penalty
Yeah, they can’t enforce it because they can’t prove who’s driving the car. Therefore, it’s unconstitutional.
This needs to be taken to the Supreme Court.
Seems too simple but looked it up and you seem to be right. No real impact other than at most a hit on your credit report. Big deal. Will keep that in mind if I get hit with one of this stupid things.
The red light cameras are illegal which is the reason they had to remove them the first time. They infringe on the rights of American citizens. If they bring them back, they can’t do anything with them except spy on people. It is illegal for them to ticket anyone using those cameras. It is just the way for Big brother to take control. I have no doubt Skippy boy is behind all of this.
