The long awaited, much anticipated grand opening of the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts, and the myriad of events associated with it – including the ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, March 20 – have been postponed due to the coronavirus.

On Thursday, March 12, Gov. Roy Cooper advised “postponing or cancelling any gatherings over 100 people. That includes conferences, assemblies sporting events, concerts, worship services and other gatherings.”

The grand opening for The Tanger – which was first envisioned in 2012 and built as a public private partnership with about 50 percent of the $90 million cost being raised privately – was going to be a celebration that began on March 18 with private receptions for the donors, continued by events daily, ending with a public open house on Sunday, March 29.

All of those events and performances have been postponed including:

  • Private Donor Receptions (March 18 & 19)
  • Ribbon Cutting Ceremony (March 20)
  • Josh Groban concert and VIP Reception (March 20)
  • Tony Bennett concert and VIP Reception (March 21)
  • Jay Leno in concert (March 22)
  • Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro Board Meeting & Breakfast (March 23)
  • Guilford College Bryan Series presents Sally Field (March 24)
  • Greensboro Symphony School Performances (March 25, 26 & 30)
  • Greensboro Symphony “Name that Tune” Gala (March 26)
  • Greensboro Symphony Masterworks (March 28)
  • Public Open House (March 29)

The good news is that the 3,023 seat Tanger Center for the Performing Arts, located downtown on a lot bounded by North Elm Street, Abe Brenner Way, Summit Avenue and Lindsay Street, is finished and ready to open, as soon as the decision is made that public safety will not be compromised by holding gatherings of 100 people or more.

Ticketholders for all of the events listed are advised to hold on to their tickets until information is available regarding the rescheduled dates.
