Let’s face it, some of the City of Greensboro’s municipal buildings are looking long in the tooth and they could use a facelift or at least a little something to spruce them up.

Like, for instance, some nice artwork created by local artists.

That’s why Creative Greensboro – the City’s office that promotes the arts and culture – is seeking applications for “Arts in Municipal Spaces,” a new initiative designed “to exhibit the work of local artists in the public corridors of municipal buildings throughout the city.”

In this first phase of the project, artwork will be displayed in the executive offices and hallways of the Melvin Municipal Office Building at 300 W. Washington St. in Greensboro.

Artists chosen for the program will receive a $200 honorarium and their artwork will be on display for one year.

The deadline to apply is Friday, March 14.

Piedmont Triad International Airport does something similar each year.  The airport seeks sculptures, paintings and works of abstract art to beautify the terminal, bring recognition to local artists, and help them sell their artwork.

No City of Greensboro program would be a City of Greensboro program if it did not include the mention of diversity, and that’s the case with this initiative as well.

The city’s call for applications reads as follows: “Art in Municipal Spaces will celebrate the rich cultural diversity of local creatives and feature artwork from emerging, mid-career and/or established professional artists. Independent artists and creative entrepreneurs who reside in Guilford County are invited to submit up to four pieces that illustrate the positive influence of the arts within our communities.”

Creative Greensboro runs lots of programs meant to beautify the city and enhance the culture.  It oversees drama programs, music ensembles and concerts as well as promoting other arts.

Jocquelyn Boone, the chief creative economy officer and head of Creative Greensboro said this municipal building art project will be a good way for local artists to get recognition while creating a more pleasurable experience for those using municipal buildings.

“Creative Greensboro is dedicated to supporting creatives within the public sector to foster relationships between artists and local government,” she said. “Maximum exposure for artists is a key ingredient to their success. We hope this initiative will expand their audience and heighten awareness about supporting local artists.”

A panel of City staff will review all eligible submissions and select the artists and artwork. Artists will be notified in April if they are chosen for the program.
