If you needed official permission to stay home Monday, you’ve got it.

Guilford County announced that all general county services, operations and facilities will be closed on Monday, Feb. 2, because of snowy and icy road conditions across the county.

At the same time, the City of Greensboro said all trash, recycling and yard waste collection scheduled for Monday has been postponed.

In short – if you were planning to run errands at a county office or roll your trash can to the curb, don’t.

Of course, Guilford County Schools will be closed to students, Monday, Feb. 2. And it won’t be a remote learning day.

Afterschool activities have been cancelled as well.

City of Greensboro offices and facilities will also be closed.

A lot of other places will be closed too: On Sunday, Aldi’s was closed but Harris Teeter and Walgreen’s were open, but, regardless, given the complete mess the city is in right now and the advantage of less people on the roads when it comes to cleaning it up, everyone should just stay home and have a me day unless you are, say, a bomb diffuser, and there’s a bomb set to go off on Monday.

County officials said the closure applies to all non-essential operations.

Essential life and public safety services will continue, including Emergency Services, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, the Fire Marshal’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office, Animal Control and designated Social Services functions.

Residents are being urged to call 9-1-1 only for life-threatening emergencies.

For non-emergency issues, county officials said Greensboro residents should call (336) 373-2222, while High Point residents should call (336) 883-3224.

Requests for Adult and Child Protective Services can be made by calling (800) 378-5315.

For those with public health appointments scheduled for Monday, the county is asking residents to call and reschedule. The county provided the following numbers:

  • Public Health Clinic: 336-641-3245 (Greensboro and High Point)
  • Dental: 336-641-3152 (Greensboro) and 336-641-7733 (High Point)
  • WIC: 336-641-3214 (Greensboro) and 336-641-7571 (High Point)

County officials said staff will continue monitoring road and facility conditions and preparing worksites so services can resume safely once conditions improve. Updates on reopening or further delays will be posted on the county’s website.

Courthouse operations are handled separately, and residents are advised to check the state courts website for the latest information on courthouse closures in Greensboro and High Point.

The county is also encouraging residents to sign up for its G.E.A.N.I. emergency alert system in order to receive urgent notifications by phone or email during severe weather events.

Meanwhile, the City of Greensboro announced that all solid waste and recycling services scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2, have been postponed because of continued snow and icy road conditions.

City crews will reassess conditions Monday to determine whether collection can safely resume on Tuesday, Feb. 3. Officials said that all Monday collections will still be picked up later this week, but there will be no yard waste or bulk pickup at all this week.

The White Street Landfill and the Solid Waste Transfer Station will also remain closed Monday.

City officials said updates on trash and recycling collection will be posted on the city’s website and social media channels.

Between closed offices, postponed trash pickup and slick roads, the message from local government is very clear – stay home if you can, stay off the roads if you don’t need to be on them and wait for things to thaw out before getting back to normal.
