There are some big egos in the City of Greensboro government and there are also some big machines that keep the city running. The first is always on display for people to see and now it will be possible to get a good view of the second as well.
The City of Greensboro’s Solid Waste and Recycling Department is rolling out its first Mighty Machines event next month – and it’s expected to be a big hit with families and residents who want to get an up-close look at the trucks and heavy equipment that keep the city running.
The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the White Street Landfill at 2503 White Street in Greensboro.
Those who attend will be able to climb inside the cabs of some of Greensboro’s largest vehicles, meet the staff who operate them, and see live demonstrations.
Featured machines include a side-loader truck, an excavator and a knuckle-boom crane, among others.
City staff will be on-site to explain how the trucks operate and what role they play in keeping the city clean and functional.
Food and fun are a big part of the mix as well: The Greensboro Police Department’s grill team will be serving up free hamburgers and hot dogs, and additional food vendors will be on-site.
Giveaways, tours and interactive displays are also on the schedule.
And the first 50 people to register online will get a food truck voucher for a free or discounted item.
Though this is Greensboro’s first Mighty Machines event, similar programs have been popping up across the country and quickly becoming a favorite with parents and children alike. Cities from Raleigh to Charlotte, and from Richmond to Atlanta, have drawn thousands to events that let kids safely touch, climb and explore the vehicles they usually only see from a great distance.
Many localities report that these events have grown so popular they’ve become annual traditions.
Greensboro officials are hoping for the same. Registration is required, and space is limited. Residents can sign up at www.greensboro-nc.gov/mightymachines.
With the combination of hands-on activities, heavy equipment demonstrations, and free food, city officials expect that the Mighty Machines kickoff will attract plenty of interest and perhaps establish yet another popular annual event in Greensboro.
