If you have business with the city to handle on Monday, you can forget about conducting it then and you might be wise to go out and enjoy a parade instead.

City of Greensboro offices will be closed Monday, January 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day – with a wide range of city services operating on holiday or modified schedules.

There will be no garbage, recycling, bulk trash, yard waste, or appliance collections on Monday. Monday’s collections will instead take place Tuesday, January 20, and Tuesday’s collections will move to Wednesday, January 21.

Solid waste facilities will also be affected. The White Street Landfill and the Solid Waste Transfer Station will be closed on January 19. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, however, will remain open, operating from 10 am to 6 pm.

Several cultural and educational facilities will be closed for the holiday.

The Greensboro Public Library system, the Greensboro History Museum, and the Greensboro Cultural Center won’t be open to the public on Monday.

Public transportation will continue to operate, though on a reduced schedule. Greensboro Transit Agency buses and Access GSO will run on a weekend schedule, with hourly service on most routes from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Parks and Recreation services will see a mix of closures and openings.

City recreation centers, Lake Higgins, the Smith and Trotter Active Adult Centers, the Greensboro Youth Council, Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation, Xperience @ Caldcleugh, the Greensboro Sportsplex, the Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion at Barber Park, and Parks and Recreation administrative offices will all be closed on January 19.

Regular hours for those programs and facilities will resume Tuesday, January 20.

At the same time, outdoor amenities will remain available: All city parks, gardens, trails, cemeteries, Lake Brandt, Lake Townsend, and Gillespie Golf Course will be open to the public throughout the holiday.

City administrative buildings will also be closed to in-person services. The Melvin Municipal Office Building and the J. Edward Kitchen Operations Center won’t be open on January 19. (Residents who need to pay a water bill during the closure are encouraged to use alternative payment options available through the city’s website.)

Water and sewer emergency services will continue without interruption. For water main breaks, sewer stoppages, or changes in the taste, odor, or color of drinking water, residents can contact Water Resources 24-hour Dispatch at 336-373-2033.

All city offices and facilities are scheduled to resume normal operations on Tuesday, January 20, following the holiday observance by the City of Greensboro.
