Each year, Guilford County uses public shaming as one of its tools to get people to pay the property taxes they owe and this year is no exception.
The release of the list each year gives everyone who wants to wade through it a chance to see who did not pay their property taxes on time, which means that, therefore, the county officially has a lien on that property until the bills are paid in full with interest. On Friday, March 14, the county put out the new list of those who haven’t paid their tax bill.
If you want to see who hasn’t paid, or who didn’t pay by the deadline in January, you should point your web browser to the following site, where a complete downloadable list will be provided:
https://www.guilfordcountync.gov/home/showdocument?id=15786
This list includes individuals and businesses.
It used to be posted in the newspaper; however, a change in state law years ago allowed the county to save money and simply post the list on the web instead.
In essence, if you are on the list it means the county can come take your property sell it at auction and use the proceeds to pay the tax bill. It rarely ever comes to that; however, if you don’t pay for a long time and don’t work with the department to cover the bill, it is a possibility.
When Guilford County Tax Director Ben Chavis released the list, he offered the following public statement:“Under and by virtue of the power vested in me by the laws of the State of North Carolina, particularly by Chapter 806 Session Laws of 1971 and set forth in GS 105-369, and pursuant to the Commissioners of Guilford County, I hereby advertise all real estate properties available for viewing.”
The list includes the unpaid Guilford County taxes, owing for the year 2024. The amounts advertised in the new public list have been increased by interest and costs.
Chavis notes, “The omission of interest and cost from the amounts advertised will not constitute a waiver of the taxing unit’s claim for those costs. The taxing unit may foreclose the tax liens and sell the real property subject to the liens in satisfaction of its claim for taxes.”
so what is the county doing to collect that money?
They put liens on the property and can foreclose on them if the property owner does not pay up.
So, you see, you don’t really own the property you are renting from the government. A powerful government that mismanages your money by paying a premium for failing schools (50%) of your taxes and practicing discrimination hiring DEIs.
So well said TERMLIMITS.
I salute you Sir!
(From the old HEE-HAW show) SAAAAAALUTE 🙂
And please don’t forget skips vote buying non profits (95%) black owned or supported to tune of 1.5 million taxpayer dollars and his two favorite projects, the new 8 person mwbe
department (skip personally created after last years budget) and his downtown money pit
That’s right. You rent your home and land from the King of Guilford County. If you don’t pay your rent, the King will sell your property and collect the taxes from the next renter. “REAL” is Spanish for “royal”. You do not own your property, the King does.
We should close all schools, fire the fire department and police, stop offering any maintenance to county owned property and never invest in our communities collectively. Then would you whinners be happy?
Chris,
I have no choice but to point out how incredibly ignorant, asinine, and plain stupid this particular comment is.
You have said your primary mission in life is to post here just to irritate people. You’ve outdone yourself sir.
I really don’t understand the mindset that government spending on anything other than military and police/fire gets conservatives so upset. There are many things where centralized coordination makes sense or many critical public services where private industry would not find profitable to service the entire population makes sense.
Public education is key. Public sector won’t find it profitable to education the poor, the disable, or the behavior problem kids for example.
Funding of Arts has value for the communities. Look at the success of the new Theater downtown and the people and revenue it draws into the community as well as making our community more attractive for growth from business and families.
Funding of research on cutting edge technology that isn’t yet have business value proposition to attract VC funds – see my response to your comment on recent LTE.
Funding to protect public land, parks, etc..
etc.. etc.. etc.. etc..
All you ever see here is ‘it’s muh money’ if it is a tax expenditure doesn’t personally benefit them. I get it from libertarians as they have a distorted view of the value public service and over confidence in private industry’s ability to operate with a public’s interest in mind.
Yes, Guilford County was insane to not reduce the tax rate with such a spike in housing prices. I view fiscal conservative (I am a Coolidge conservative) as balancing spending and revenue to have a surplus of tax revenue in strong financial years and only use debt for stimulus spending to lift the economy out of recessions or broader financial crisis.
I just get tired of the ‘it’s muh money’ whining about taxes and stating we should eliminate as many public services as possible. I believe we should focus on making public services as efficient as possible. Which Musk claims he is doing but clearly isn’t. He is just making broad stroke assumptions and gutting public services.
But you be you. Whine away.
Yep. As a libertarian leaning independent I can say my “distorted view” as Chris calls it is damn near 20/20. The less government, the better! I’ll defend that until my toes turn up, and I draw a government pension every month. For the most part government is the most crooked business on the planet regardless of who is in office. It’s as asinine as a homeowners association. What you do with your money and your land is your business, not mine, and keep your @$$ away from mine. We’re starting to see some positive changes, let’s just hope the momentum continues.
I understand the idea of less government and its appeal. i just see it as a false promise. Private industry has proven again and again that profits over people, environment and fair competition is the norm. Without government oversight, labor would have few if any rights, waste would fill our water supplies and land would be cleared for until little remaining value remains. And of course, big business would shut out small business with unfair trade practices.
Without safety nets, public health of the elderly would decline, homeless population would explode, and crime would dramatically increase.
Not to mention loss of innovative research (which Trump is already eliminating), rampant fraud and corruption (Trump wants to impeach judges that hold up the rule of law), and declining education standards as private education would only support the profitable students and ignore the disable, lower income and rural communities.
Just sharing my view of why the idea of 20/20 doesn’t exist when looking in the future past dramatic change that libertarians think they want.
And more than 50% of the people reading this are mad as hell that somebody is going after all the fraud, waste and abuse at the federal level…because their tv tells them.
Trump and Elon aren’t cutting fraud and waste (especially their own), they are just randomly cutting across the board things they think their cult follows don’t like DOE, Investments in Science (especially climate science), Saftey nets for the poor, etc….
And of course they are ignoring the law, the courts and any decency while they do it. Wait until one of their cuts impacts someone in your life directly and see you the lack of empathy in their actions makes you feel. The number of angry people is growing daily.
For once you’re right Chris. The number of angry people is growing daily AT THE BOARD OF COMMISSARS.
Here in Guilford County, they clearly deserve it. As do Trump and Musk.
Sorry, Chris, I missed the safety nets cut for the poor, please enlighten me. You are asking the “cult” to be happy with the Department of Education when USA ranks last in educational achievements? Are you saying that Trump and his team are ignoring or worst flaunting the law for the “cult?” As far as I know, the judges involved with trying to stop DODGE and Trump were appointed by Obama: Christopher Cooper, Tanya Chutkan, Ellen Hollander, Beryl Howell, Adam B. Abelson (appointed by Biden, same difference as Obama. All judges blocking DODGE and Trump are from the District of Columbia court or District of Maryland, in other words, the swamp.
So, I guess what you are really saying is that you want fraud and waste to continue; that you are fine with your tax dollars being spent on what has thus far been revealed by DODGE?
We have the top universities in the world and the DOE supports many programs to keep access available to all qualified students regardless of wealth or race.
Again, with k-12 public education, that is a state problem. The federal government mostly helps with funding of schools in poorer communities (title 1 schools) but things like curriculum etc.. are a State mandate. Not federal.
So your argument is miss guided and to actual purpose of the DOE just as Trump and DOGE provide you plenty of other misinformation with regard to their ability to eliminate fraud and waste.
Lastly, judges are the most important balance of or check on power as established by the Constitution of the United State. If Trump and company can just choose which judges to ignore, that is a violation of everything that has made our form of government great by allowing full unchecked power to run over the rule of law. If you support that, then empty the jails and let’s go wild west.
But you be you.
Chris. . . you forget “judge shopping” has been going on since the American Revolution. I predict we will never see the real truth in many things that happen to us. But when politicians (and newspapers) are asking for your money, they have an agenda that is probably different from yours.
So, we should ignore the courts because we ‘don’t trust the judge’?
And you say you don’t support corruption in Washington? Right. Gotcha ya, wink wink
You can thank me and dr. Wade for saving guilford county tax payers thousands of dollars . We got a bill passed to not have to advertise in local paper . Local blog called triadwatch which I do not do anymore helped in making case for it and also talking with state reps on this issue of wasted taxpayer money going to newspapers all over state
It’s called collusion of the “print” media with local politicians. What was routine printing of newspapers 40-50 years ago is not the same as what we do today with technology. The print news media relied on the funds from printing the information, but with technology that is a moot issue. Yet they whine about it. Look at the News & Record as an example. They tried to make it in the tech world but lost and they shifted their print operation to Winston-Salem. The same will be true with on-line media companies constantly begging for your money to stay in business. When I get these “advertisements” from various media sites I block them, so I won’t get the “please help us by donating to keep our on-line services.”
Property taxes are extortion plain and simple. We paid our taxes although we should not have. Guilford county allowed an illegal alien gang member to go free after a breaking and entering of the residence and destruction of private property. The North Carolina department of public safety which is a mother f****** joke chose not to even take the 17-year-old in front of a judge and I had to raise hell to get the district attorney to agree to take the case, but by the time that had happened he fled to another state imagine that. Everybody sees what Elon and Doge are doing for the federal government. We need that in North Carolina in every county because they are wasting and pocketing more of our tax dollars then you can imagine
You can thank Dr. Wade and I for getting a bill passed for guilford county taxpayers . It was a tough battle with all the blowhard editors all over state fighting us but it is a total waste of tax money to have to publish in local papers all over state . It should be a complete state bill but it is only for guilford county taxpayers. My blog triadwatch had plenty of posts on this issue . I do not do the blog anymore but it was fun to do.
What are they actually doing with the revenue? It’s nigh time we demand an accounting. We are paying more and more for less in any area you choose to mention; from law enforcement, education, public safety, city services, etc. please vote this lot out!
Lots of snark, but not name-calling or angry words… You should be proud of yourselves for treating this touchstone of derision with such kid-gloves… I’m proud to know you are out there! Thanks for your passion over such a derided yet pivotal topic. And thanks to Scott Yost for putting his hand directly on the skillet!
Not surprised A2Z Towing isn’t paying their taxes. The City of High Point not paying all of their taxes is just hilarious.
A homeowner works diligently to buy a house and then to pay off the mortgage, believing that at some point the house will be owned free and clear. But no, that isn’t the case because the county and/or city governments suck money out of the homeowner forever. Want to improve your home? The government will increase your rent. Want to add a small shed in the backyard. Good luck with getting a permit that is then used to tell the government to up your rent. Want to add a room? You may but your rent will go up. You decide that additions or improvements are not in the budget. However, what must be in the homeowner’s budget is the increase in rent imposed by the government from the passage of time, known as revaluation. It is time to end this tyranny. It is time to institute another way to pay for schools and county services. Are you listening, state of North Carolina? Property taxes should be abolished and only you can do it!
Owning something is not a taxable event, or it’s just extortion, pure and simple.
Yes indeed. You own your home and the land it sits on, but we all know the government sees you as renting the property for tax purposes.
the income that purchases ‘property’ is taxed then the ‘property’ is taxed . . . . this is ‘taxing’ ! the cost of materialism.
It’s not the cost of materialism, it’s the cost of The Parasitic Sector.
who puts out the fire on your property & deals with the unexpected crime on your property & picks up the garbage generated on your property, sends an ambulance & protects it from invaders ?
The ” naughty list” will continue to grow since a large majority of citizens struggle with everday expenses. Then you have your city and county pouring on extensive taxes they can’t pay but they pay for all the pet projects and other wasteful programs that are pay backs for votes. My guess is county and city citizens like paying high taxes for junk programs. They continue to vote the same junk back into office.
Taxpayers of Guildford County,
Go to your windows, throw them open, lean out and yell at the top of your lungs…
“I’M MAD AS HELL AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!”
Thank you Howard Beale (Peter Finch) of the movie Network
Google it folks, it’s the inspiration we all need.
I wonder how many non payers it would take to mount an effective tax revolt. If a hundred people do it they just put you on the list and eventually foreclose. If a thousand people don’t pay it might get a mention at one of Skip’s monthly meetings. But would ten thousand people make the politicos take notice? Twenty thousand? When it hits the budget hard enough they have to address it. But then maybe Skip could take some of the funds from the school bond to keep the county running…….
Peter,
Remember who you’re talking about here…Herr Skip and his merry band of thieves. These are people who have no heart for we, the common man.
And my guess is Skips ownership of the Woolworth property is not taxed since it is a national landmark, and he charges for admission. See how this works?
Excellent question.
We would have to become organized and united. Something like this happened in the late 70’s in California, led by a guy names Howard Jarvis. He got a measure on the ballot to limit Property Tax, and it passed easily.
Alston needs a similar slap in the face, but I don’t know how we’d do it.
NC is not California. North Carolinians are more compliant. Regardless, the current manner of taxing property to fund county services and schools should be paid another way. Considering the people who live in Greensboro or any other city, they pay property taxes to the county AND the city. Taxing property makes no sense except to governments. It is an easy way to collect taxes to then waste the money on commissioners’ and council members’ special projects like CRT, DEI, WMBE, buying votes by increasing government employees’ pay and taking advantage of nonprofit status such as the Woolworth Museum and living in nonprofit retirement facilities for the well-off. Property tax money gives money to Skippy to force businesses to operate in a manner that may be contrary to success.
Yes, I’m aware that NC is not California, and I agree with the balance of your comment.
I think it’s wrong to do that to people, maybe they have a hard time financially. Nobody else needs to know anybody else’s business. I put this kind of activity in the same category as the restrictions and HOA bylaws, nothing but 100% discrimination and snobbery in its finest form. Snobbery, Snobbery, snobbery and nothing but being a busy body. Really sad
Someone needs to take deed, restrictions and HOA bylaws to the Supreme Court of the United States and get it deemed unconstitutional.
