Fear is powerful

Many state politicians rushed to increase restrictions to position themselves as proactive. Many policies were counterproductive. Several stay-at-home restrictions were created based on the assumption that people would forget to implement the measures. We would forget our masks and to remain separated by six feet. The policies took this into account. However, they forgot that people are social beings. Long periods of overzealous restrictions would eventually be ignored or openly fought. Less restrictive realistic scientifically based measures would have been more likely to be followed for a prolonged period of time.
Quality of life is as important as quantity.
Several policies are counter to known science. Even prior to COVID-19, we knew that outdoor elements reduce respiratory disease transmission. UV light dries droplets reducing virus lifespan. Wind disperses droplets reducing geographic viral load. The sheer volume of evidence demonstrated that outdoors are safer than indoors. However, parks and playgrounds were closed. Still, several individuals feared COVID could be different. So, epidemiologists demonstrated that even COVID infections were much more likely to have occurred indoors than outdoors. Fear wasn’t calmed. So, the CDC showed, scientifically, that COVID particles live much longer indoors than outdoors. It seems nothing can calm unrealistic fear. Nature parks and playgrounds should never have been closed. Once the science proved fears incorrect, they should have been opened immediately. They should not be included in reopening phases. Based on scientific evidence, they shouldn’t have been closed.
Several news organizations loudly supported continuation of over restrictive policies in article headlines. They pointed out that premature removal caused large rebounds during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. Buried in the articles are much less totalitarian restrictions. In 1918 only “indoor public gatherings” were prevented. Indoor entertainment venues, such as theaters, were closed. Schools were closed. Churches were allowed to hold services outside. Factories do not meet definition of public gatherings.
The worst part of COVID fear is that realistic facts and concerns are censored. Discussing supply chain implications and economic impact is “heartless.” Some want to do everything possible to isolate society, to stop COVID, regardless of implications. They want those they silenced to pay for the extreme measures even if, in the end, nobody can afford the cost. It is easy to ignore reality when you expect someone else to pay. You cannot force others to bury their heads in the sand.

@Alan Marshall, no one is preventing the worshiping of God. You can worship him where ever you want. He supposedly hears you no matter where you speak to him. You do not need a congregation or building. So worship on!
Lizzy can’t read apparently. The NC Constitution says religious liberty is “according to the dictates of their own consciences” and that “no human authority” shall interfere with it.
Yet in Lizzie’s world, that doesn’t matter. If you want to worship in a closed car in a parking lot with many other closed cars on Easter Sunday, which Guilford County wanted (and you likely supported), then prepare to be cited and arrested. If you want to go to a church to receive the sacrament of Communion or Eucharist, prepare to be cited and arrested.
What other liberties do you feel the government gave me, out of the kindness of its heart, so that you can take it from me when it makes you feel better?
I’m not out doing these things Lizzy criticizes, but I do criticize those who exercise their rights. It is not my place to ask the government to infringe upon them.
Sweden did voluntary restrictions, and has done very well. Perhaps we ought to consider the same.
@Bryan, so your christian beliefs make it perfectly ok to put the lives of your fellow worshipers and community in jeopardy? Glad I’m not a part of your cult. Sweden’s model worked because their society is not full of “ME, ME, ME” entitled people like the good ol USofA has become. Just freaking look around man, what percentage of the people do you see RIGHT now, with restrictions enforce, walking around flaunting them. It is a bunch! Look at the news footage of YOUR protesters, none with masks and no separation. Go to Food Lion see how many people don’t have on masks, go to Lowes and look at the crowds of people that make social distancing impossible. I hope you have no high risk loved ones, because with your attitude they are doomed. It is pitiful that in your mind religion is more important than a human life. Just sad and unchristian if you ask me.
You miss the point. People are being punished for exercising their God given rights to not just worship as they see fit but to gather for the purpose of PEACEFULLY protesting the unlawful withholding those rights.
In my opinion this looks a lot like the camel’s nose starting to poke under the tent. And not just in NC but across the country.
@Alan And NONE of your protestors had on masks or were practicing social distancing. Hence why everything in this country has to be legislated. ME, ME, ME and Only ME matters in large swaths of this population. You know, if this virus only targeted people who protested or had their poor rights infringed upon it would be one thing but only the most vulnerable of the population are the highest risk. The virus doesn’t care it wasn’t them that protested but a loved one who did and brought it home. ZERO sense of community. I am so proud that my church has taken the health of it’s members seriously and has been closed for in person gatherings since even before State leadership gave stay at home directives (for the good of the community). Given has actually increased during this time as the church leadership transitioned to online services, online bible studies / meetings. Even now that the courts are ruling that Churches can have indoor services, our church leadership is consider what is best for members.
It isn’t about WHEN you open up your businesses or religious services. It’s about HOW you reopen. While we all want to return to the way it was, change has come and we have to adjust to a new norm for a period of time.
Glad my church has real leaders that even require mandates to do what is right for their community. No yelling about laws, constitutions or rights….only a true focus on what is right and good for all. THAT is real leadership. Maybe you can learn from their example Alan.

It is amazing how a diseased mind can make folks read things into a statement which were never said. And make them not hear things which are.

To Bob Kollar…it would serve you well if you took the time to actually listen to what President Trump said regarding disinfectants and their use… . Or perhaps you could furnish us with a link to hear President Trump make such a statement. You are right about November can’t come soon enough…when President Donald Trump will be RE-ELECTED!!!!

Harder to find but staggering are the numbers of out-of-work nurses and laid-off hospital workers due to lack of patients.
Looks like Governor Cooper is not only pushing restaurants and small businesses toward imminent bankruptcy but hospitals as well!
